Types of Beef Cattle

Shorthorn Always Red, White,Paint or Roan in color One of the original 3 breeds English Class Known for good milking ability

Angus English Breed, came from Scotland. Naturally polled Always solid black Excellent carcass quality Bull 1,600-2,000 lbs.

Red Angus English Breed, Developed from a genetic mutation in the US from Black Angus stock Top beef producers much like black angus Excellent carcass quality

Beefmaster American Breed, came from Lasater Ranch at Falfurrias, Texas. 25% Hereford, 25% Shorthorn, 50% Brahman Good milk producers Bull 2,000-2,600 lbs.

Brahman American Breed, came from Southern part of the U.S. Originated from the Zebu White, gray, red, brown, and black colors loose pendulous skin, big ears and hump over shoulder Bulls 1,800-2,400 lbs.

Brangus American Breed, came from Clear Creek Ranch in Welsh Oklahoma 3/8ths Brahman,5/8 Angus high quality carcass well adapted to southern part of U.S. Bull 1,800-2,400 lbs.

CHAROLAIS Exotic Breed with excellent Carcass Came from the French providence of Charolles. Long body, and heavy muscled White or light straw color Horned Breed Mature bull 2,500-2,800 lbs.

CHIANINA Exotic Breed Came from Chianina Valley in central Italy White and black in color-Always have dark skin pigment Largest of all beef breeds Bull 2,500-2,800 lbs. American Chianina only needs to be 1/3

Hereford English Breed, came from Herefordshire, England Medium to dark red with white faces, crests and white underline,feet and tail Foraging ability and hardiness, mothering ability 1,800-2,100 lbs. Most registry of any breed in the US

Polled Hereford English Breed, came from Iowa as a result of genetic mutation of Horned Herefords naturally horn less desired beef carcass, and early maturing calves. Bull 1,800-2,100 lbs.

LIMOUSIN Exotic Breed, from south central France Known for small calves and excellent muscular carcasses Originally developed for draft and beef Wheat, redish, and light yellow color Excellent beef conformation, bull 2,400lbs.

Maine-Anjou Exotic Breed, came from France. Red with white marking to dark roan color. Black is common color now Meat and milk Bull 2,400 lbs. Heavy muscled and long bodied. Very popular show cattle

SANTA GERTRUDIS American Breed, came from the King Ranch Adapt to sub-tropical conditions 5/8ths Red Shorthorn and 3/8ths Red Brahman cross Solid Cherry red Bull 2,200-2,600 lbs. Horned breed but some polled are found

SIMMENTAL Exotic Breed, came from Simme Valley of Switzerland Red to yellow, white spotted or solid. Many have White Faces Originally tri-purpose-Meat, milk and draft Bull 2,600 lbs. Over the years they have moderated in size thru selection

Simbrah 50%Simmental & 50%Brahman Large American developed in U.S. Most are red or red and white but can vary.

Longhorn Originally brought over by the Spanish Conquistadors Some Value today for small birth weight Many consider them to have high aesthetic value for colorful hide and large horns. Great longevity and disease/parasite resistance Little carcass value- light muscle and slow growth
