1.7. Physique Unit 1: Factors affecting performance LS (Unit 1) Factors affecting performance 1.7: Fitness ?

Learning Objectives By the end of this lesson students should: Comprehend the term ‘physique’. Understand the link between body type and somatotype. Describe each somatotype and their corresponding physiological indicators. Consider the three types of extreme somatotype that exist. Logically state the most suitable body type for a role or position in a particular sport. Assessment: A*-C Grade = more in-depth answers and extension work D-G Grade = answer most questions at foundation level LS (Unit 1) Factors affecting performance 1.7: Fitness

Task 1: Physique Definition: The shape and size of a human body. WHAT DO YOU THINK WHEN YOU SEE THIS WORD??? Definition: The shape and size of a human body. You cannot control it and it develops naturally. Why??? Height and general body shape are preordained. Preordained??? You may be able to influence your body composition and musculature. How??? ACTIVITY: 1. Think of 3 sports that require the performer to have different physiques. 2. Describe the physique - think about height, weight, degree of fat/muscle. DO NOT WORRY ABOUT WHY THEY NEED THAT PHYSIQUE! LS (Unit 1) Factors affecting performance 1.7: Fitness

LS (Unit 1) Factors affecting performance 1.7: Fitness ?

Task 2: Somatotype Certain body types are better for some sports than others. With a certain type of body: Some activities are easier with more chance of success. Some activities are more difficult with less chance of success. ACTIVITY: Why would these statements be true? Give examples.   2. Performers can be put into sports/positions because of their somatotype. CAN YOU THINK OF ANY EXAMPLES AND WHY? LS (Unit 1) Factors affecting performance 1.7: Fitness

Task 3: Activity Explain the differences between these people in their sports. Why do these differences occur? What are the benefits of their different somatotypes? LS (Unit 1) Factors affecting performance 1.7: Fitness

Task 4: Endomorph Refers to the DEGREE OF FATNESS. Physiological Aspects: Pear-shaped. Wide hips & shoulders. Tends to gain fat on upper arms, waist & thighs. Short legs in relation to their truck. LS (Unit 1) Factors affecting performance 1.7: Fitness

Task 5: Mesomorph Refers to the DEGREE OF MUSCULARITY. Physiological Aspects: Broad shoulders. Muscles - arms and legs. Narrow hips. Minimal amount of fat. Typically the most suited somatotype for performers at a high level in a vast majority of sports. LS (Unit 1) Factors affecting performance 1.7: Fitness

Task 6: Endomorph Refers to the DEGREE OF LINEARITY. Physiological Aspects: Long limbs. Slender. Thin. Narrow shoulders & hips. Very little muscle & body fat. LS (Unit 1) Factors affecting performance 1.7: Fitness

Task 6: Different Somatotypes in Sport ACTIVITY: On the next 6 slides are different somatotypes. What are the advantages of having a certain somatotype for these sports/positions? Think about the demands of each sport. Floor Routine (Gymnastics) Rings (Gymnastics) High Jumper Prop Forward (Rugby) Winger (Rugby) Jockey LS (Unit 1) Factors affecting performance 1.7: Fitness
