Greek Architecture

Introduction to Greek Architecture The Classical Age (about 500 to 323 B.C) The city-state of Athens was the center of Greek culture and arts. On top of a hill in Athens is the Acropolis, a collection of monuments and temples dedicated to the gods. The best known is the Parthenon. Greek culture influenced the architecture of every period of Western civilization Today we see museums, academies, and colleges, court houses, public buildings and banks that became Greek temple “look a likes”

The Temple Greek Architecture One of the most important buildings in a Greek town was the temple Where the Gods were worshiped Rectangular, with columns holding up the roof over an entrance and sanctuary Inside stood a colossal statue of the god to whom the temple was dedicated

Greek Architecture The Three Orders The different types of columns are called “orders” because their parts and proportions are ordered and coordinated The three orders are: The Doric Order The Ionic Order The Corinthian Order

THE DORIC ORDER Greek Architecture The shaft of the column rests on the topmost step. It tapers towards the top in a slightly swelling curve. Doric temples were powerful structure, and heavy in appearance. The capitals are huge and flat. Most Doric temples were built on mainland Greece. Examples: The Basilica (Temple of Hera) and the Parthenon

The Ionic Order Greek Architecture This order is much lighter and more delicate than the Doric. The columns are set on a base and are much more slender. The capitals are decorated with a spiral or scroll motif. Most of these temples were on the mainland of Greece Examples: The temple of Athena Nike, The Erechtheum, the Porch of the Maidens

The Corinthian Order Greek Architecture The Corinthian style has towering columns crowned with decorative capitals of acanthus leaves. This style was developed late in Greek civilization and is actually seen most often on Roman temples. This style is very fancy. Example: Temple of the Olympian Zeus.
