You may not realize it, but some of the most famous buildings in the world have been influenced by Greek architects, including buildings in the United States. During the Classical period in Greece, three main styles emerged: 1. Doric 2. Ionic 3. Corinthian

The Doric Style This style is characterized by heavy columns with thick square capitals (tops). capital

The Parthenon temple was built to honor the patron goddess, Athena. This building is built in the Doric style.

Ionic style This style is a little fancier than the Doric style. It has more flutes (lines) on the column and has a swirling design around the top of the capital. capital

The temple of Athena Nike is one of the most famous buildings constructed in the Ionic style.

Corinthian Style The third style that you can typically see on Greek architecture is characterized by acanthus leaves scrolls on the capital. capital
