Spain claims an empire

Line of demarcation-1493 A boundary set by Pope Alexander VI to settle disputes over which nation could claim the newly discovered lands. Portugal received the lands to the east Spain received the lands to the west

Treaty of tordesillas-1494 Moved the Line of Demarcation 800 miles to the west. Who did this move benefit?

Mercantilism An economic system designed to increase a nation’s wealth by establishing a favorable balance of trade.

Amerigo vespucci One of the first to explore North America after Columbus. Gave such detailed accounts of the new land that it was named after him. He realized that it was not Asia

Ferdinand Magellan Proposed sailing south of South America in order to reach Asia. Was killed in the Philippines. His crew completed the voyage and became the first people to sail around the world.

Conquistadors Spanish soldiers who explored and claimed much of South and Central America for Spain. Extremely brutal treatment of the natives. Most famous Hernan Cortez.
