LESSON 2 Module 4: Working with Images Logos

In this lesson, we will: Investigate different logo types and their purpose. Collect various logos and analyze their effectiveness. Create a logo based on them.

Guiding Questions What is a logo? Why would a company want to create a logo? Use the guiding questions as a class starter, allowing the students time to answer the questions in their journal. Discuss student answers to the questions.

Web sites What is a logo: Visual Literacy: http://k-8visual.info/ Presenting Effective Web Graphics: http://docs.rinet.ru/WebGraphics/ch6.htm Use Web sites to give background information and show examples.

Use Web sites to give background information and show examples.

Inspiration Web of Logos Open a blank Inspiration file. In the main idea, type “Logos” and the meaning. Go to the Internet to collect logos. Copy and paste at least 6 different logos onto your Inspiration Web (2 symbols, 2 text, 2 symbol and text). Write a brief explanation of the logo (under “Logo” in Inspiration): What it represents and whether or not it is successful. Cite (copy and paste) the Web site address under the logo as well. Save the Inspiration file in your folder. Student Activity

Logo Design Make a list of your interests, activities, and beliefs in your journal. Draw 5 sketches of different combinations representing these in your journal. Choose one sketch and finalize it on the handout. Add text if appropriate. Add color using colored pencils or markers. Under the final logo, add your rationale for choosing the symbols and colors for your logo. Handout: S.4.2.WS_Logos

Lesson Review During this lesson, we discussed different types of logos and their use, and we created a logo. Logo: A logo is a trademark, text, or symbol that represents a company, organization, or individual. A logo represents the company’s message or purpose. Summary and Vocabulary

Assessment What is a logo? How is a logo used in Web design? Predict what the logo for “Green Matters” would look like. The company works with global recycling. Ask students to answer questions in their journal, with a partner, or as a whole class.
