The Active Shooter Defined An “Active Shooter” is an individual engaged in killing or attempting to kill people in a confined and populated area, in most cases, active shooters use firearms.

Mentality of Active Shooter Desire is to kill and seriously injure without concern for his safety or threat of capture Normally has intended victims and will search them out Accepts targets of opportunity while searching for or after finding intended victims Will continue to move throughout building/area until stopped by law enforcement, suicide, or other intervention

What to do to survive DEVELOP A PLAN  

What to do to survive Run Hide Fight Quickly determine the most reasonable way to protect your own life. Run Hide Fight People are likely to follow the lead of managers during an active shooter situation.

RUN Have a planned escape route Evacuate - If there is an accessible escape path. Have a planned escape route Evacuate regardless of whether others agree to follow Leave your belongings behind Help others escape, if possible Prevent individuals from entering an area where the active shooter may be Call 911 when you are safe

HIDE Be out of the active shooter’s view Shelter In Place - If evacuation is not possible. Be out of the active shooter’s view Lock/Blockade yourself in an office or closet Silence your cell phone Turn off any source of noise (i.e., radio, television) Hide behind large items (i.e., desk, cabinets) Remain QUIET

FIGHT Violent, aggressive posture Utilize improvised weapons Defend yourself - As a last resort, and only if your life is in danger. Violent, aggressive posture Utilize improvised weapons Yell, disrupt Commit to your actions

When Protective Services Arrives The purpose of Protective Services is to stop the active shooter as soon as possible. Officers may arrive in teams of three (3) or four (4) armed with rifles, shotguns or handguns Officers may wear regular patrol uniforms or tactical equipment Officers may shout commands, and push individuals to the ground for safety reasons

When Protective Services Arrives Remain calm and follow officers’ instructions Drop any items in your hands Immediately raise hands and spread fingers Keep hands visible at all times Avoid quick movements towards officers, pointing, screaming and/or yelling

Everyone's Role & Responsibility Prepare an evacuation plan Treat all alarms and communications as a real life incident Participate in all evacuation drills and communication tests conducted on Center Report violent acts or threats of violence to your immediate supervisor, OHCM, and Protective Services Foster a respectful workplace We will go into details on “Prepare an evacuation plan” on next slide.
