Monday, November 28th 10 minutes to study for Unit 5 Vocabulary Quiz Take Unit 5 Vocabulary Quiz (@ noon) After quiz, respond to Do Now Prompt Introduction to SGGK Read SGGK, answer two questions Respond to video question *** All written work will be collected

DO NOW – Grab a textbook from the back of the room and then respond to the following on a sheet of paper: After we read Sir Gawain and the Green Knight today, we will discover that Sir Gawain, though honorable, fails in his quest when he chooses to give himself an unfair advantage in his meeting with the Green Knight. In the academic world, students have access to many tools, one of them being Sparknotes. What do you believe is the role of Sparknotes? Is it cheating to use them? In what capacity is using educational notes and guides acceptable. Is there a temptation to take the easy way out? Does this justify why teachers make you feel guilty or tell you not to use them?

Sir Gawain and the Green Knight It’s not easy being green… or is it?

Popular Themes in Medieval Literature Chivalry Courtly Love

The Structure of the Poem Three Gawains Represent the Three Fitts (The 3 Steps towards Heaven): How does Gawain show that he is a courteous and brave brother of Round Table? In the 2nd part of the story, Gawain is now a guest at another man’s castle. How does he try to uphold his values? In the last part of the story, Gawain is confronted by the Green Knight. How do we know that he is flawed and represents the everyday man?

Has our basic needs/motivations changed? Desire to survive Look good Attract a mate Attempt to uphold morality

Scenario One: You are at a party, having a great time, when a frightening guest crashes it. He/she demands that someone fight him/her—if he/she dares!

Scenario Two: There’s a kid at school who is an unbearable braggart. He/she is the best at everything!! How would you teach him/her a lesson?

Scenario Three: Someone you are very attracted to uses his/her sex appeal to talk you into doing something you know is wrong.   .

Scenario Four: You have to admit you have done something wrong in front of a large group of your peers.

The Half-Blood Prince of Bel-Air In the burbs of Hockessin, not born, but raised Scootering is how Jarred spent most of his days Working at Walgreens and thinking he’s cool Jarred really bawls outside of the school Because Jarred tried to make comebacks that aren’t any good Because they speak politely in his sheltered neighborhood. Wearing skinny jeans that sit right on his waist Jarred proves that he really has no taste. But Mr. Lin’s taste buds can taste all the flavor, Thanks for the meal, victory is nice to savor. An ode to Jarred Hargrove!

A Modern Day Tale of Sir Gawain and the Green Knight

Respond in 2-3 paragraphs (collected) Explain the similarities between this clip and Sir Gawain and the Green Knight. Consider the situation, the ethical dilemma/temptations, and the resolution. Just like in SGGK, is this a fair test to give to someone, knowing that you are deceiving them to prove a point/teach a lesson? What would you do in this situation? Why? When you do something dishonest, do you think of the consequences or feel guilty, or do you only consider these things if you get caught?
