The Corner Kick (17) U.S. Soccer Federation Referee Program Online Training Script: Welcome to U.S. Soccer’s online training for the Grade 8 Referee Course. Training for this course is specific to preparing officials for the competitive youth game. This presentation focuses on Law 17 – The Corner Kick. U.S. Soccer Federation Referee Program Grade 8 Referee Course Competitive Youth Training

Review Ball crosses goal line Last touched by a defender No goal is scored Can score directly from a corner kick Online Training Script: Classroom Instructor Talking Points: Review of elements taught in first day material. Discussion point – ask if you can score a goal against yourself directly from a corner kick.

Requirements Kick taken on side where ball went out Ball inside of corner arc Opponents 10 yards from corner arc Ball in play when it’s kicked and moves Online Training Script: A corner kick is awarded when the entire ball passes over the goal line, either on the ground or in the air, having last touched a player from the defending team when a goal has not been scored. The ball must be placed inside the corner arc and is in play when it is kicked, therefore the ball does not need to leave the corner arc to be in play. Opposing players must respect the minimum distance at a corner kick and since a corner kick can be taken from anywhere within the corner arc, opponents must be 10 yards away from the corner arc itself, regardless of where the ball is placed. Where necessary, the referee should warn any player within this distance before the corner kick is taken and caution the player if he or she subsequently fails to retreat to the correct distance. Also, the kicker may not touch the ball again until it has touched another player. Classroom Instructor Talking Points:

Player Management Online Training Script: Corner kicks can sometimes be volatile in the competitive youth game. Teams may utilize set plays that result in goal scoring opportunities and players will often fight for the best position in order to gain an advantage. The referee must be aware of this and use preventive officiating techniques to attempt to stop problems before the ball is put into play. Once the ball is in play, the preventable problems can become fouls or misconduct. Classroom Instructor Talking Points:

Techniques Have a presence Be aware of the situation Understand potential team tactics Be proactive Communicate with players Online Training Script: Referees at the competitive youth level are reminded to use the same preventive officiating techniques discussed in Law 13 to avoid issuing cards whenever possible.   Some of these preventive techniques include the referee having a presence near play, being aware of the situation and the potential tactics that the teams might attempt, being proactive rather than reactive, communicating with players, both visually and/or verbally, and allowing assistant referees to help manage corner kicks when in their vicinity. Classroom Instructor Talking Points:

Infringements Double touch – IFK to opponent Retake corner kick for any other infringement Online Training Script: If, after the ball is in play, the kicker touches the ball again before it has touched another player an indirect free kick is awarded to the opposing team, to be taken from the place where the infringement occurred. In the event of any other infringement the corner kick is retaken. Classroom Instructor Talking Points:

Review Question What is the correct restart if the ball goes directly into the opponent’s goal from a corner kick? Corner kick Goal kick Throw-in Kick-off Online Training Script: Classroom Instructor Talking Points:

Review Question What is the correct restart if the ball leaves the field but then curves back into play from a corner kick? Corner kick Goal kick Throw-in Kick-off Online Training Script: Classroom Instructor Talking Points: Animation of ball curving out and back in will begin automatically and repeat 3 times.
