LAW 13 Free kicks An OVERVIEW LAW 14 Penalty Kicks Imagine you are playing in or watching a soccer match and a big scramble occurs 20 yards in front of 1 teams’ goal. The referee blows the whistle and points toward the same goal. A player quickly sets the ball and kicks it directly into the goal. Amid the celebration, the referee has given a goal kick to the defense. What happened ? How do they know ? 2017

2 DEFINITION OF A FREE KICK
“The way play is restarted after the referee has stopped play for an infraction”

3 THERE ARE ONLY 2 TYPES OF FREE KICKS
DFK (Direct Free Kick) “One Touch” IFK (Indirect Free Kick) “Second Touch Required”

4 GOAL! DIRECT FREE KICK One of the 10 DFK fouls
B A One of the 10 DFK fouls Outside penalty area of offending team Can score directly against opponent

5 A SPECIAL TYPE OF DFK … The PENALTY KICK
A penalty kick is awarded when a defender commits any of the 10 DFK fouls inside their own penalty area against an opponent * while ball is in play *Handling the ball is an exception

9 GOAL AREA REQUIREMENTS
Exception #1 (Defenders) DFK or IFK given to a team within own Goal Area Ball may be placed anywhere within goal area All opponents must be at least 10 yards away AND outside Penalty Area Ball must clear Penalty Area prior to 2nd touch

10 GOAL AREA REQUIREMENTS
Exception #2 (Attackers) IFK given to a team within opponent’s Goal Area Ball is moved out to nearest point on the Goal Area Line parallel to the Goal Line for IFK

11 PENALTY KICK REQUIREMENTS Exception #3 (Attackers and Defenders)
AR R Ball is placed on the Penalty Mark.

12 FREE KICK “RULES” Ball placed at point of infraction (3 exceptions)
Ball must be stationary No encroachment by opponents DFK & IFK - ball may be kicked in any direction Penalty Kick – ball must be kicked forward Ball is in play when it is kicked and clearly moves (and leaves penalty area into the field-of-play, if appropriate) No “double touch” by kicker Cannot score directly (first touch) against self

13 BALL IN-PLAY VS. GOAL SCORED
Ball is “in-play” when: Kicked and clearly moves AND Leaves Penalty Area (if appropriate) It hits the ground … Dropped Ball Goal can be scored when: Ball is “in-play” AND Ball is kicked into opponents goal AND On IFK only - if ball is touched by 2nd player AND After a dropped ball – only if there are at least two players who touch the ball
