DDG 1223 PRINCIPLES OF MANAGEMENT REV 01 Introduction to management Definition: Management refers to the process of getting things done, effectively and efficiently, through and with other people. Organization: A systematic arrangement of people brought together to accomplish some specific purpose. DDG 1223 PRINCIPLES OF MANAGEMENT

DDG 1223 PRINCIPLES OF MANAGEMENT REV 02 Efficiently means doing task correctly; and refers to the relationship between input and output. Example: if you get more output for a given input (money, people, equipment, raw material), you have increase efficiency. Management therefore concerned with minimizing resource cost. Effectiveness means doing the right task that translates into goal attainment. Example: Some government agencies are reasonable effective but extremely inefficient. That is, they accomplish their goals but do so at a very high cost. DDG 1223 PRINCIPLES OF MANAGEMENT

DDG 1223 PRINCIPLES OF MANAGEMENT REV 02 What Three Common Characteristics Do All Organization Shares? a.   Goal : to be a leading private college b.   People: performing a variety of activities to make the goal a reality c.   Structure: define and limits the behavior of its members. Eg: creating rules and regulations, supervisory control over others, forming work teams or writing job descriptions so that organization know what they are supposed to do. DDG 1223 PRINCIPLES OF MANAGEMENT REV 01 Managers: Individuals in an organization who direct the activities of others. Manager can be divided into first-line and middle manager. First-Line manager acts as a supervisor who is responsible for directing the day-to-day activities of operative employee. Organizing: Determining what tasks are to be done, who is to do them, how the tasks are to be grouped, who reports to whom, and where decisions are to be made. DDG 1223 PRINCIPLES OF MANAGEMENT

Controlling: The process of monitoring performance, comparing it with goals, and correcting any significant deviations. DDG 1223 PRINCIPLES OF MANAGEMENT

Specific skills: controlling, organizing, coordinating, handling information, motivating, problem solving and providing growth and development. Management Competencies: A cluster of knowledge, skills, and attitudes related to effective managerial performance. DDG 1223 PRINCIPLES OF MANAGEMENT

DDG 1223 PRINCIPLES OF MANAGEMENT REV 02 General skills a manager must possess 1. Conceptual skills – refers to the mental ability to analyze diagnose complex situation. 2. Interpersonal skills – the ability to work with, understand, monitor, and motivate other people, both individually and in groups.   3. Technical skills – the ability to apply specialized knowledge or expertise, the ability to used the tools, procedures and techniques of a specialized field 4. Political skills – the ability to enhance one’s position, built a power base, and establish the right connections DDG 1223 PRINCIPLES OF MANAGEMENT
