Leadership Qualities & Styles Ascribed Leadership vs Attained Leadership Ascribed Leadership Gained by status Examples include Professional Athletes, Movie Stars & Musicians High status in our society makes most look up to as role models How many live up to the status we give them? Are they leaders? In school, how many Ascribed Leaders do we have? Attained Leadership Gained by performance and hard work! Earned! Great examples include some of the best captains off of Pro teams

Where are you ? Ascribed Leadership vs Attained Leadership Rate yourself from 1-10. Explain why you rated yourself the way you did? Which of these two leadership qualities would be most beneficial to the Sports Medicine field? Why? Why did you rate yourself the way you did? Are there people in this class who are seen as leaders just because they are popular? Explain.

Formal vs Informal Leadership Chosen or Assigned leadership roles Typically your captains or assistant captains Typically assigned this position because they demonstrate leadership qualities Informal Leadership Not designated as a leader but still shows leadership Anyone who leads without being a designated leader Quite often lead by example Anyone can be this kind of leader These kinds over leaders put their teams over the top

Where are you? Formal/Informal/Both? What type are you? Formal? Informal? Both? Provide a personal example of Formal Leadership. Provide a personal example of Informal Leadership. What impact will each of these types of Leadership have on our Sports Medicine 20 Class? Is it important to take on Formal Leadership Roles in class? Why Is it important to be an informal leader in class? Why?

Specific vs Non Specific Leadership Demonstrates leadership only in specific situations This Person is only a leader in their designated sport or situation These players do not show the same leadership skills in other situations Non Specific Leadership Demonstrates leadership in all situations This person is always a leader no matter what the situation is

Where do you rate? Rate yourself from 1-10. Explain why you rated yourself this way? Does this type of leadership have an impact on our class? Why or why not? Are you a leader in all situations? Expand your answer to provide examples that support the position you took.

Leading & Following “To lead people, walk beside them ... As for the best leaders, the people do not notice their existence. The next best, the people honor and praise. The next, the people fear. And the next, the people hate ... When the best leader's work is done the people say, 'We did it ourselves” Lao-tsu

Leading & Following Good leading requires good following Good leading is hard because you have to give of your self To be a good follower you have to believe Are you a good follower when you are not a leader? Rate yourself out of 10 for Leading. Explain why you rated yourself this way. Rate yourself out of 10 for Following. How important is following in this course? Explain.

Types of Teammates (People) Builders vs Destroyers Building is 6 times harder to do It takes hard work and perseverance You have to take ownership (buy in) You can not be afraid to fail The greatest people in the world have failed over and over but learn from each failure When you fail you become an easy target to others Destroying is Easy to do Is it the nature of our society? People are easily detached Are people more worried about what someone else thinks than what they want to get done? Available for energy use in 15-20 minutes

What type of Teammate are you? Rate yourself from 1-10. What kind of person do you have to be to be in this field? Why? What impact will destructive personalities have on our class this semester? Why will these personality types have this impact? Are there destructive personalities in this class? What is their impact? Think of potential careers in Sports Medicine. What kind of people are in these careers? What kind of personality qualities do these people have? Are they builders or destroyers? Available for energy use in 15-20 minutes

Are you Proactive or Reactive? Initiates positive (Think before acting) This prevents negative from occurring Working from a positive perspective leads to positive Does this prevent any negative from occurring? How we handle Negative events define our character. Reactive Reacts to negative occurrences The negative has already occurred What type of person are you? Rate yourself. Explain why?

Givers vs Takers Givers add to the situation They give unconditionally Selfless and generous Builder Hardest to do (Society may not have this same ideal) Takers reduce the situation Easy to do especially when givers do so unconditionally What would happen if everyone was a taker?

What are you? A Giver or Taker? Rate yourself from 1-10 in the Wellness Center. Why did you rate yourself this way? Provide examples that support your rating. Rate yourself from 1-10 in this class. Rate yourself from 1-10 in the school. Should there be a difference between each of these areas? Why? Are there any takers in this class? Explain.

What Personality Type are you? Prioritizer: Understands what is most important Gets the most important things done Procrastinator: Puts off getting things done Usually gets things done eventually but the work done is not always done the best (The work is typically rushed) Slacker: Lazy, does the bare minimum Takes the path of least resistance which leads to mediocrity Yes Man: All talk and no action. Talk is cheap!

How will this impact you in this class? Explain what personality type you are. Are you a Priotizer, Procrastinator, Slacker or Yes Man? What impact will this have on you and your chance for success in this class? If you are not where you want to be, what do you plan to do about it? Why is so important to be a Prioritizer in this field? If you pursue something in the Sports Medicine, why Prioritizing so important?

What Personality Type are you? Assertive (Win-Win) Stands up for self (Confident) Considers more than just self (Generous) Has great success but not at someone else expense Aggressive (Win-Lose) Has to win at all costs (Usually physically abusive) Selfish & Self Centered (Destroyer and Taker) Passive (Lose-Win) Always gives in to others (Many people in our society are passive) Passive Aggressive (Lose-Lose) Always gives in to others but lashes out behind the scenes Acts one way in front of everyone but is very destructive at quieter times

How will this impact you in this class? What personality type is most desirable? Why? What personality type are you? Explain why you rated yourself this way. Provide personal examples to support your rating. If you are not where you want to be, what do plan to do about it? Why are aggressive personality types dangerous in this field?
