1 Some practical advice Coaching philosophy

2 Things to think about Think of the Athlete first.
Put the Athlete first, not in the middle of club vs. high school, parent vs. athlete Instill good values and build character. Encourage and teach, teach, teach. Emphasize improvement, not just winning, as a sign of success. Make positive rules that are student and team-centered.

3 Separate talent from the person. Be a coach, not a critic.
Be consistent in making decisions. “Walk the Talk” Know your strengths and weaknesses. Make excellence a part of your routine. Seek excellence, not perfection Eliminate negativity and complaints

4 Unconditional mutual respect must drive the coach-athlete relationship.
The team always comes first. From day one, begin to build future leaders. Keep an open mind. Learning is a life-long pursuit. Explain why you do the things you do. Sportsmanship should be top priority. Put it in writing.

5 you are a role model and teacher.
Become a communicator. Make parents a part of the team. Be organized. Be critical in a private, closed setting. Praise your athletes or team in public. Be the calming influence in tough, emotional contests. Failing to prepare may lead to failure.

6 Emphasize the level of work ethic required to achieve success, and de-emphasize luck and talent as components of winning. If you don’t know where you are going, any path will do. Listen! Responsibility as a coach is to have the athlete rise to your level of expectation at each and every workout. Avoid comparisons.

7 Remember to HAVE FUN. Coaching philosophy
With these things in mind, you are ready to establish your coaching philosophy. Include what is important to you and to your athletes. Consider the role of school administrators and parents. Remember to HAVE FUN.
