3 Career “Booster” There are 5 ways to acquire leadership skills through volunteering! You will be able to develop all of these qualities. It’s all about having the right approach. Volunteering is an extremely valuable chance for developing yourself as a future leader, These will some of the most valuable qualities to add to your resume.

4 1. Escape your Comfort Zone
When you volunteer you challenge yourself to work with new people and in a new environment. Whether you are an extrovert or an introvert, volunteering for something you are passionate about teaches you how to react in many different situations. How can I apply this to my resume? Adaptability-Give examples of how you adjusted your path to ensure a goal is met. Collaboration-Give examples of working with different people and how you accomplished. Problem Solving-Give examples of working through challenges and still accomplishing your goals.

2. Build a Network You get an opportunity to build a network of people that you may not have had the opportunity to do prior. Do not focus on meeting all the “big shots”, focus on expanding your contacts to improve your communications skills.   You will likely get a job through who you know rather than through your education or work experience. How can I apply this to my resume? Teamwork-Give examples of how to completed tasks/projects working with all different kinds of people. Collaboration-Give examples of working with different people and how you accomplished. Communications-Give examples displaying confident, articulate, and professional speaking abilities; show you can be Empathic listener and persuasive speaker.

3. Work Ethic When we are working or doing something we are passionate about it is easier to develop professional work ethic skills. In addition to working hard it is also important to work smart. This means learning the most efficient way to complete tasks and finding ways to save time while completing daily assignments. How can I apply this to my resume? Time Management-Give examples of how you were able to complete a task in such a short amount of time. Self-motivation -Give examples of ways you are self-motivated. Did you overhaul a broken system? Show that you do more than just “getting by” and meeting the minimum standard. Ability to Work Under Pressure- Give examples of how you handle deadlines and people with multiple personalities.

7 4. Organizational/time management skills
Every successful leader must have the ability to manage their time wisely. They should show great ability to be organized regardless of their workload. Volunteering is a great way to develop these skills at your own pace. How can I apply this to my resume? Time Management-Give examples of how you were able to complete a task in such a short amount of time. Decision Making-Give examples of ways you prioritize your projects. Ex. Delegating work. Multi-tasking-Give examples of how you are capable of handling multiple projects concurrently.

5. Freedom to experiment Ideally you can take risks at work. That's easier in some organizations than others. Most volunteer organization give you latitude to experiment and try new things. How can I apply this to my resume? Creativity-Give examples of how you were able to find new and more efficient ways to achieve a task Competence-Give examples of how you use different approaches to solve a problem or to complete a project/task. Vision-Give examples of how you started a project or task from start to finish
