LHC Science Goals & Objectives Anadi Canepa and Jim Hirschauer Strategic Planning Workshop October 21, 2016

CMSDAS 2016 LHC Science CMS at Fermilab Largest US group on CMS and second largest group overall ~60 CMS authors (+ 5 emeritus), including 15 RAs Total effort (including professionals) is >100 FTE Fermilab personnel are currently active in: Physics: SUSY and other BSM searches, Higgs, SM measurements Phase 1 and 2 Upgrades Computing: Host of US Tier-1 (largest of all T1s) CMS software CMSDAS 2016 Host lab for CMS in the US Manage Ops Program and Upgrade Projects Host LHC Physics Center (LPC) and Remote Operations Center for university users Jim Hirschauer : LHC Science : Fermilab Strategic Planning Workshop : Oct 21, 2016

LHC Science LHC schedule Jim Hirschauer : LHC Science : Fermilab Strategic Planning Workshop : Oct 21, 2016

7.7 TeV dijet event LHC Science In 10 years, Fermilab will continue to be the leading U.S. center for CMS, and the second leading center in the world after our partner CERN. Lab Goals (5 years) L1) Maximizing science from LHC Runs 2 and 3 L2) Completing CMS phase 1 and establishing phase 2 upgrade projects L3) Completing LARP and establishing the high-luminosity LHC upgrade project L4) Maintaining technical expertise and facilities to support the LHC program L5) Continuing R&D and physics studies for future colliders Jim Hirschauer : LHC Science : Fermilab Strategic Planning Workshop : Oct 21, 2016

Progress and changes since 2015 workshop LHC Science Completed objectives: LARP: Build 4 long Nb3Sn coils for 1st quadrupole magnet prototype Future colliders: Document physics case and scope for a future collider Completed milestones related to objectives: Achieved CD-0 for CMS phase 2 HL-LHC upgrade. Achieved CD-0 for HL-LHC Accelerator Upgrade Project (AUP). FNAL CMS detector groups compiled individual facilities/expertise reports. Changes to objectives: Added crab cavities to US scope for HL-LHC AUP. LARP objectives updated to reduce dependence on additional funding. Facilities/expertise plan evolving as upgrade scope is determined. Jim Hirschauer : LHC Science : Fermilab Strategic Planning Workshop : Oct 21, 2016

L1) Maximize science from LHC Runs 2 and 3 LHC Science Continue leading role in SUSY and Higgs physics for LHC Run 2 and beyond Support LHC Physics Center users vibrant academic environment and opportunity for detector upgrade work Excel at CMS tracker, hadron calorimeter, and data acquisition system operations Excel at operating Tier-1 and USCMS LPC computing Lead the development of CMS software Preselection for top squark search. Baylor LPC student evaluating phase I HCAL electronics. Jim Hirschauer : LHC Science : Fermilab Strategic Planning Workshop : Oct 21, 2016

L2) Complete CMS phase 1 upgrade and establish phase 2 upgrade projects LHC Science Complete phase 1 CMS detector upgrade project (2019) forward pixel detector (2017), hadron calorimeter (2016-18), and trigger (complete) Achieve CD-2/3 for CMS phase 2 upgrade project (2019) US scope with FNAL participation: outer tracker (OT), calorimeter, trigger US scope: forward pixels, muon system CD-0 in 2016 (complete), CD-1 in 2017, CD-3a in 2018 for OT silicon Assembly of 1st forward pixel half cylinder Jim Hirschauer : LHC Science : Fermilab Strategic Planning Workshop : Oct 21, 2016

L3) Complete LARP and establish HL-LHC accelerator upgrade project LHC Science Build 4 long Nb3Sn coils for 1st quad magnet prototype for LARP (complete) Test first long quad magnet prototype for LARP (2017) Achieve CD-3 (2018) for HL-LHC accelerator upgrade project US contribution includes 50% of triplet quadrupole magnets and 50% of dressed crab cavities (new) CD-0 in April 2016 (complete), CD-1/3a in FY17, and CD-2/3 in FY18. MQXFS1 (1m long and 15cm aperture) coil and quench history Jim Hirschauer : LHC Science : Fermilab Strategic Planning Workshop : Oct 21, 2016

L4) Maintain technical expertise and facilities to support LHC program LHC Science Identify needs in technical expertise and facilities Develop in concert with upgrade project managers Reports from calorimeter, tracker, and track trigger (complete) Develop and implement succession plan for needed expertise and facilities plan After identifying needs, develop plan to maintain appropriate staff levels including engineers, technicians, and scientists Inputs to the CMS succession plan will also inform planning for IERC. L5) Continue R&D and physics studies for future colliders Document the physics case and scope for a future collider (complete) Ashutosh Kotwal led “grass roots” effort at LPC resulting in 5 publications in 2015-16. Study machine parameters and detector designs to support physics case. Effort reduced to 0.5 FTE based on recommendation from comparative review. Jim Hirschauer : LHC Science : Fermilab Strategic Planning Workshop : Oct 21, 2016
