Reading materials for home support Talkabout cards Sequencing cards Reading books Sound boxes Tricky word/HFW games Please date when you have read with your child in the reading record book.

Understanding + word recognition

Reading materials used for understanding, speaking and listening Good understanding and speaking & listening skills are key to good reading development! Encourage full sentences when answering questions in the talk about cards/textless books/sequencing cards. Develop their understanding of cause and effect using ‘because’.

Initial sounds and picture clues Not every word can be sounded out! We must use the pictures and think about the initial sound. It’s a good idea to look through the pictures first to help with vocabulary. Don’t forget to point to the words!
