Presentation transcript:

Bystanders ? A bystander is a person present at an event without participating in it.

Bystanders can also be present at events which are not so nice…

If you were a bystander in some of these next scenes… what would you do?

Bystander Effect The more people who are present at an event, the less likely it is that anyone will intervene. Why?

Is this some kind of joke? No one else is doing anything

Someone else must be getting help

Someone else must be doing it Why don’t we help? Someone else must be doing it Someone else better able to do something Fear of doing the wrong thing Discuss each point in more detail: What if everyone else thought someone else must be doing it? As above – what is there is no-one better ‘qualified’ than you? Could there be a ‘wrong thing’? Is doing something better than doing nothing at all? While it is important to keep your self safe and not put yourself in immediate danger, you could go and get help, ring the police, etc. Fear of consequences

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Vo7kl9RsWBo Ask for thoughts about the clip. How do you think the girl felt when she was being bullied? How do you think she felt when other people helped? Did the bullying stop?

Bullying & Bystanders Bullying takes different forms; it is usually repetitive and involves an imbalance of power. Discuss bullying definition. What do we mean by ‘repetitive’? Most Leics schools use the student friendly definition Several Times On Purpose. ‘Imbalance of Power’ – can be physical power (being taller and/or stronger than the other person), social power (one person being more popular than the other), etc.

What are the 4 different types of bullying? Physical – Punching, kicking, pushing, slapping, etc. Verbal – Name calling, teasing, threats, etc. Emotional – Exclusion, rumour spreading, etc Ask audience for 4 types of bullying. ‘Types’ = ways in which people can be bullied. Cyber – Bullying through social media, texts, email, etc.

Most bullying takes place in front of other people. Why do you think this might be..? Possible reason may be because some people feel powerful when their behaviour is being ’supported’ by others. If people are there and not trying to stop the bullying, they are supporting that behaviour.

Why don’t people intervene? ‘It might be me next’ ‘It’s only a bit of fun’ ‘They deserve it’ If I ignore it, it might stop

What should bystanders do? See it, get help, stop it. Don’t join in Tell the person to stop, if it is safe to do so. Form a friendship group for the person being bullied to make sure they are not isolated.

Don’t be a BYstander, be an UPstander When an upstander sees or hears about someone being bullied, they speak up. Being an upstander is being a hero: we are standing up for what is right and doing our best to help support and protect someone who is being hurt.

We don’t have to wear a costume to be a hero. Use your #powerforgood.
