3 Definition of Bullying 1. Repeated: : renewed or recurring again and again 1. Malicious Intent: ◦Malicious: having or showing a desire to cause harm to someone ◦Intent: the act or fact of 1. Imbalance of Power: ◦Imbalance: the state of being out of proportion ◦Power: ability to act or produce an effect

4 It is estimated that 160,000 children miss school every day due to fear of attack or intimidation by other students. American schools harbor approximately 2.1 million bullies and 2.7 million of their victims. 1 in 7 Students in Grades K-12 is either a bully or a victim of bullying. 56% of students have personally witnessed some type of bullying at school. 15% of all school absenteeism is directly related to fears of being bullied at school. 71% of students report incidents of bullying as a problem at their school. 5 Types of Bullying Physical- pushing, shoving, hitting—in a malicious manner Verbal – name calling, insulting, making racist, sexist or homophobic jokes, remarks or teasing, using sexually suggestive or abusive language, offensive or threatening remarks, etc. Social/Emotional – spreading nasty stories about someone, exclusion from social groups, being made the subject of malicious rumors, sending abusive mail, and email and text messages (cyber bullying).

6 Types of Bullying Cyber - any type of bullying that is carried out by electronic medium. There are many types including: 1. Text message bullying 2. Picture/video clip bullying via mobile phone cameras 3. Phone call bullying via mobile phones 4. E-mail bullying 5. Chat-room bullying 6. Bullying through instant messaging (IM) 7. Bullying via websites or social media like Facebook,Twitter, etc.

7 1.Do you make mean faces or bad hand signs to others? 2.Do you spread rumors or say mean things about others behind their back? 3.Do you make fun or tease other teens or adults often? 4.Do you whisper secrets to a friend in front of another person and then not share the secret with him or her? 5.Have you purposely not invited someone to hang out with you and your friends? 6.Have you ever or are you currently part of a clique that is exclusive about whom you can or cannot be friends with and has not let others join? 7.Do you often make fun of others because they are “different” from you or your friends? (Example: they have glasses, ugly clothes, bad hair, or a different religion) 8.Have you hazed another member of your sports team? 9.Have you ever threatened to hurt someone? 10.Have you ever punched, shoved or hit another person? Think About It!

9 Tattle vs. Report- “ what’s worth reporting” Incidents when you  feel threatened  witness someone else being threatened  when you just know something is wrong

10 Bullying: What Can You Do? Let someone know what is happening!!! It’s okay to ask for help Being bullied is not your fault!! Who can you go to???? ◦ Parents, Teachers, Advisor, Principal, Vice Principal

11 Put Yourself in Someone Else’s Shoes If you were being bullied… How would you feel? What would you do?

12 Everyone Can Help Out! Good Citizens Do The Right Thing!  Don’t join in  Refuse to watch  Say something- “Hey don’t do that to him.”  Report Bullying to an adult  Invite the person being bullied to join your group  Be a friend to a person being bullied  Distract the bully so that he or she stops
