Pharaoh Khufu The Great Pyramid Mrs. DelGrosso/Ms. West

“Purpose of the Egyptian Pyramids” What was the main purpose of the pyramids? Pyramids were built as a symbol of the Egyptian society. They were burial chambers for the pharaohs.

“Purpose of the Egyptian Pyramids” What did the symbols on the walls represent?   The symbols painted on the walls of the inside of the pyramid would serve as a guide for the pharaoh on his way to heaven. Along his journey, he would be questioned and these symbols would give him the answers.

“Purpose of the Egyptian Pyramids” Why do historians believe the pyramids were shaped the way they were? Egyptians believed that the Earth was created from a prehistoric mound, so the pyramids were shaped to represent that. They also, represented the descending rays of sunshine.

“Purpose of the Egyptian Pyramids” What part of the Nile River were pyramids built on? Why? The pyramids were built on the west bank of the Nile River. They were built on the west because this is where the sun sets.

“Purpose of the Egyptian Pyramids” Why was the Great Pyramid built in the center of the night sky?     This was believed to give the pharaoh a direct shot right into the realm of the Gods, and eternal life.

“Purpose of the Egyptian Pyramids”    How did religion play a role in pyramids? Explain using at least two reasons. Religion played a role in the pyramids because they were burial chambers for the pharaohs. This meant they were a gateway to the gods.
