Project Area Processes and Diagnostics 2010-04-06 Mats Sjödin TURBO POWER

Commission of the European Communities Development of Low Carbon Technologies SET-plan (Strategic Energy Technology) To develop technology for the European energy system for the transition to low carbon economy that will be on the market by 2020 and that will achieve large market shares during the period up to 2050. Technology Map: Analysis of the current state of the individual technologies, their anticipated development and market potential. Capacities Map: Private and public R & D investments in these technologies. Define measurable and suitable technological objectives. Required research, development and demonstration activities for each large scale program such as the EII (European Industrial Initiative) 2010-04-06 Mats Sjödin TURBO POWER

Commission of the European Communities SET-plan Roadmap Wind energy: 20 % of the EU electricity will be produced by wind by 2020. Solar energy: 15 % of the EU electricity will be generated by solar by 2020. If DESERTEC vision is achieved the contribution will be higher. Bio energy: 14 % of the EU electricity will be produced by cost-competitive sustainable bio-energy by 2020. Carbon Capture and Storage Technology: CCS technologies will become cost-competitive by 2020. Nuclear energy: First generation IV nuclear reactor in operation by 2020. Electricity grid: Electricity grid will be able to integrate 35 % renewable by 2020. European cities: 25 to 30 European cities will be at the fore front of the transition to low carbon economy by 2020. 2010-04-06 Mats Sjödin TURBO POWER 3

Commission of the European Communities This European research, development and demonstration program on low carbon energy technologies has been estimated to cost between 60 – 70 billion € over the next 10 years European Industrial Initiatives Total B€ Wind energy 6 Solar energy (CSP & PV) 16 Bio-energy 9 Carbon Capture and Storage 10.5-16.5 Sustainable Nuclear energy 5-10 Electricity grid 2 Smart Cities 10-12 Total 58.5-71.5 35.5- 46.5 B€ 2019-04-06 Mats Sjödin TURBO POWER 4

Mediterranean Sunbelt Potential Acceptable CSP sites- Mediterranean and North Africa Daily >5 kWh/m2, annually > 1800 kWh/m2 DESERTEC Take advanced CSP-plants to commercial level to contribute to about 3 % of the European electricity supply by 2020 with a potential of at least 10 % if the DESERTEC vision is achieved. 2010-04-06 Mats Sjödin TURBO POWER

Bio-fuel Production Processes (SET-plan) The EII proposes to carry out an ambitious demonstration program of different bio-energy pathways at a scale appropriate to the level of maturity: Pilot Plants Pre-commercial Demonstrators Full Industrial Scale Except for bio-mass co-firing in fossil power plants and biogas production from agricultural residues, all other technologies require considerable research and development. Combined heat and power is moving to wide commercial exploitation in co-firing systems with fossil fuel. Production of bio-fuels from ligno-cellulosic biomass is only at the pilot scale. 2010-04-06 Mats Sjödin TURBO POWER 7

Oxy-fuel Conceptual Design (SET-plan) A prerequisite for large scale deployment of CCS is demonstration of the technical and economic feasibility of the existing technologies. A comprehensive research program to reduce costs, increase efficiencies of the whole CCS chain. The goal is to make CCS commercially feasible by 2020. 2010-04-06 Mats Sjödin TURBO POWER 8

Oxy-fuel Conceptual Design Oxy-fuel Compressor and Turbine conceptual design software to generate preliminary turbo unit key dimensions and performance in an early stage of the project. Exploring and optimizing design concepts by simultaneously consider constraints from thermodynamics, aerodynamics and mechanics. 2010-04-06 Mats Sjödin TURBO POWER
