I. Total Depravity B. Scriptural Support: Isa. 64:6; Jer. 17:9; 5/19/2018 I. Total Depravity B. Scriptural Support: Isa. 64:6; Jer. 17:9; Rom. 3:23 3

5/19/2018 Jeremiah 17:9 The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately sick; who can understand it?

For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God. 5/19/2018 Romans 3:23 For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.

Isaiah 64:6 We have all become like one who is unclean, 5/19/2018 Isaiah 64:6 We have all become like one who is unclean, and all our righteous deeds are like a polluted garment. We all fade like a leaf, and our iniquities, like the wind, take us away.

5/19/2018 Isaiah 6:1-5 In the year that King Uzziah died I saw the Lord sitting upon a throne, high and lifted up; and the train of his robe filled the temple.  Above him stood the seraphim. Each had six wings: with two he covered his face, and with two he covered his feet, and with two he flew.  And one called to another and said:

Isaiah 6:1-5 “Holy, holy, holy is the Lord of hosts; 5/19/2018 Isaiah 6:1-5 “Holy, holy, holy is the Lord of hosts; the whole earth is full of his glory!”  And the foundations of the thresholds shook at the voice of him who called, and the house was filled with smoke.  And I said: “Woe is me! For I am lost; for I am a man of unclean lips, and I dwell in the midst of a people of unclean lips; for my eyes have seen the King, the Lord of hosts!”

II. Implications for the unbeliever 5/19/2018 II. Implications for the unbeliever A. Extensive – Applies to all mankind 10

II. Implications for the unbeliever 5/19/2018 II. Implications for the unbeliever B. Intensive – All mankind is utterly beyond self-repair 11

II. Implications for the unbeliever 5/19/2018 II. Implications for the unbeliever C . Savable – God’s salvation is available to all mankind (John 1:9; 1 John 2:2; 2 Peter 2:1) 13

II. Implications for the unbeliever 5/19/2018 II. Implications for the unbeliever D . Responsible – Man is constitutionally capable of belief (2 Cor. 4:3-4; Eph. 2:8-9) 14

5/19/2018 2 Corinthians 4:3-4 “ And even if our gospel is veiled, it is veiled to those who are perishing. In their case the god of this world has blinded the minds of the unbelievers, to keep them from seeing the light of the gospel of the glory of Christ, who is the image of God.

5/19/2018 Ephesians 2:8-9 For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God,  not a result of works, so that no one may boast.

III. Implications for the believer 5/19/2018 III. Implications for the believer Evangelism of the lost has a real effect 18

III. Implications for the believer 5/19/2018 III. Implications for the believer B. Recognition of being a new creation (2 Cor. 5:217; Rm. 6) 19

5/19/2018 Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come. 2 Cor. 5:17 20

5/19/2018 We were buried therefore with him by baptism into death, in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, we too might walk in newness of life. For if we have been united with him in a death like his, we shall certainly be united with him in a resurrection like his.  We know that our old self was crucified with him in order that the body of sin might be brought to nothing, so that we would no longer be enslaved to sin. Romans 6:4-6 21

III. Implications for the believer 5/19/2018 III. Implications for the believer C. Struggle with the old sin nature is real (Romans 7:15-25) 22

5/19/2018 Romans 7:15-25 For I do not understand my own actions. For I do not do what I want, but I do the very thing I hate. Now if I do what I do not want, I agree with the law, that it is good. So now it is no longer I who do it, but sin that dwells within me. For I know that nothing good dwells in me, that is, in my flesh. For I have the desire to do what is right, but not the ability to carry it out. For I do not do the good I want, but the evil I do not want is what I keep on doing.  Now if I do what I do not want, it is no longer I who do it, but sin that dwells within me.   23

5/19/2018 Romans 7:15-25  So I find it to be a law that when I want to do right, evil lies close at hand.  For I delight in the law of God, in my inner being, but I see in my members another law waging war against the law of my mind and making me captive to the law of sin that dwells in my members.  Wretched man that I am! Who will deliver me from this body of death?  Thanks be to God through Jesus Christ our Lord! So then, I myself serve the law of God with my mind, but with my flesh I serve the law of sin. 24

III. Implications for the believer 5/19/2018 III. Implications for the believer D. Submission to the Holy Spirit is necessary for successful Christian living (Romans 8:5-6) 25

5/19/2018 Romans 8:5-6  For those who live according to the flesh set their minds on the things of the flesh, but those who live according to the Spirit set their minds on the things of the Spirit. For to set the mind on the flesh is death, but to set the mind on the Spirit is life and peace. 26

III. Implications for the believer 5/19/2018 III. Implications for the believer D. Praise to God for delivering us from the penalty and power of sin! (1 Timothy 1:15-16) 27

5/19/2018 1 Timothy 1:15-16 The saying is trustworthy and deserving of full acceptance, that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners, of whom I am the foremost. But I received mercy for this reason, that in me, as the foremost, Jesus Christ might display his perfect patience as an example to those who were to believe in him for eternal life. 28
