1 What Makes Worship?

2 What Makes Worship? 1 Samuel 15:22 NIV
But Samuel replied:  "Does the LORD delight in burnt offerings and sacrifices as much as in obeying the voice of the LORD ? To obey is better than sacrifice, and to heed is better than the fat of rams.” A constant theme from the Old Testament to the new. What is the point Samuel is making? Why is this such an important issue? How does it apply to us?

3 What Makes Worship? Hebrews 13: 15-16 NIV
15Through Jesus, therefore, let us continually offer to God a sacrifice of praise--the fruit of lips that confess his name. 16And do not forget to do good and to share with others, for with such sacrifices God is pleased. What do we learn about worship here? How is worship described here? What should we apply?

4 What Makes Worship? John 4:21-24 NIV
21Jesus declared, "Believe me, woman, a time is coming when you will worship the Father neither on this mountain nor in Jerusalem. 22You Samaritans worship what you do not know; we worship what we do know, for salvation is from the Jews. 23Yet a time is coming and has now come when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth, for they are the kind of worshipers the Father seeks. 24God is spirit, and his worshipers must worship in spirit and in truth."  What does it mean to worship God in Spirit and truth? What would the opposite be? How can you tell the difference? Is this a purely personal application, or is it also congregational?

5 What Makes Worship? Ephesians 5:15-21 NIV
15Be very careful, then, how you live--not as unwise but as wise, 16making the most of every opportunity, because the days are evil. 17Therefore do not be foolish, but understand what the Lord's will is. 18Do not get drunk on wine, which leads to debauchery. Instead, be filled with the Spirit.

6 What Makes Worship? Ephesians 5:15-21 NIV
19Speak to one another with psalms, hymns and spiritual songs. Sing and make music in your heart to the Lord, 20always giving thanks to God the Father for everything, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ.  21Submit to one another out of reverence for Christ.  What is the dynamic about worship described here that we do implement? What is the dynamic about worship described here that we do not implement? Does it matter? Why, or why not?

7 What Makes Worship? Colossians 3:16-17 NIV
16Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly as you teach and admonish one another with all wisdom, and as you sing psalms, hymns and spiritual songs with gratitude in your hearts to God. 17And whatever you do, whether in word or deed, do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.    What do we learn about worship here? Does this mean that everything that you do could be considered worship?

8 What Makes Worship? Isaiah 6:1-9 NIV
1 In the year that King Uzziah died, I saw the Lord seated on a throne, high and exalted, and the train of his robe filled the temple. 2 Above him were seraphs, each with six wings: With two wings they covered their faces, with two they covered their feet, and with two they were flying. 3 And they were calling to one another:  "Holy, holy, holy is the LORD Almighty;  the whole earth is full of his glory."

9 What Makes Worship? Isaiah 6:1-9 NIV
4 At the sound of their voices the doorposts and thresholds shook and the temple was filled with smoke.  5 "Woe to me!" I cried. "I am ruined! For I am a man of unclean lips, and I live among a people of unclean lips, and my eyes have seen the King, the LORD Almighty."  6 Then one of the seraphs flew to me with a live coal in his hand, which he had taken with tongs from the altar.

10 What Makes Worship? Isaiah 6:1-9 NIV
7 With it he touched my mouth and said, "See, this has touched your lips; your guilt is taken away and your sin atoned for."  8 Then I heard the voice of the Lord saying, "Whom shall I send? And who will go for us?"  And I said, "Here am I. Send me!"  9 He said, "Go and tell this people:  This is considered to be the quintessential description of what worship is about. What happens here? Sees God clearly Sees himself clearly Confesses sin God acts to remove sin God calls Isaiah responds
