Numeration This slide show will review for you how numbers are formed, and how to compare and order whole numbers. You will also see questions throughout and they are numbered. You will write the answers down on a piece of paper and we will check them as we go through the activities.

New Vocabulary Definitions Digits – The digits 0,1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9 are used to write numbers. PlaceValue – The place of a digit in a number tells you its value. Standard Form – 1,600,000 Expanded Form – 1,000,000 + 600,000 Word Form – One million, six hundred thousand Period – the group of ones, tens and hundreds for each place value.

A group of 3 digits in a number is a _____. 3. _____ is the position of a digit in a number that is used to determine the value of a digit. 4. 800+90+2 = 5. 3000+400+50=

Numeration System??? A numeration system is a system or plan for naming numbers. It uses the digits 0 through 9. It uses groups of 10. The position to the left is 10 times the position to it’s right. This is called a base ten numeration system.

Video Now we will view a video on place value of whole numbers. After the video is over, we will practice working on place values.

Place value To write numbers, we use any one of the ten digits in any place value. Example: 432 has a 4 in the hundreds place, a 3 in the tens place, and a 2 in the ones place. Here is place value chart for a large number.

Comparing and Ordering Whole Numbers Comparing and ordering whole numbers are important to understand. You need to know which numbers are smaller or larger. The way you can do this is by understanding the VALUE of each digit in their respective places.

Video Now we will view a video on comparing and ordering whole numbers. After the video is over, we will practice comparing and ordering some whole numbers.

What we have learned Digits are put in place values to write numbers. Place value determines the value of a digit. We can compare whole numbers using the signs > greater than, < less than and = equal to. We can order numbers by comparing their place values and digits.
