Comparing and Ordering Large Numbers

What’s bigger? 1 145 799OR1 146 679 How do you know?

We can use this tool: Hundred Million Ten Million Hundred Thousand Ten Thousand HundredsTensOnes 1145799 1146679 1 145 799 OR 1 146 679 We can see by looking at the columns in our place value chart which place values are the same in value and where one is bigger or smaller than the other.

Hundred Million Ten Million Hundred Thousand Ten Thousand HundredsTensOnes 1145799 1146679 First we look at the millions – they’re the same We check the next column – also the same Where do we finally see a difference? _______

Greater than, Less than, Equal to: We use the symbols, = to express these things. > means ‘greater than’ < means ‘less than’ = stands for ‘equal to’

What sign would I put in each of these to express which is greater or lesser? 1 145 799 __ 1 146 679 1 146 679 __ 1 145 799

Remember: Be fussy and careful about writing large numbers - please use spaces or commas. Some of you are not using either so numbers are looking like this: 60000000 or 6 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 This makes it hard to read. This number should be:60 000 000 – Now you can easily tell which period the largest digits are in and you can accurately and quickly identify it.
