Lab Equipment

Test Tube They are designed to allow easy heating of samples, to be held in a flame Often used when multiple small chemical or biological samples have to be handled and/or stored.

Test Tube Rack Used to store and hold test tubes in an upright position.

Test Tube Brush Used to clean the insides of test tubes.

Test Tube Holder Used to hold test tubes, especially when heated or containing harmful chemicals.

Tongs Tongs are gripping and lifting tools Hold many different things such as flasks, crucibles, and evaporating dishes when they are hot

Bottle Used for Storage Mixing displaying

Mortar and Pestle two tools used with each other to grind and mix substances. The mortar is a bowl-like vessel used to contain a substance. Mortars have smooth, rounded bottoms and wide mouths. The pestle is a stick used for pounding and grinding.

Thermometer used to measure temperatures or temperature changes. Usually in degrees Celsius

Stopper Come in many different sizes Can have holes for thermometers and other probes that may be used

Erlenmeyer Flask Used to heat and store liquids Advantage is the wider bottom so it will heat quicker because of the greater surface area exposed to heat

Evaporating dish Used to heat and evaporate liquids

Funnel Used to channel liquid or fine-grained substances into containers with a small opening. usually made of either stainless sheet metal or plastic, but sometimes paper funnels are used in cases where it would be difficult to adequately clean the funnel afterwards

Bunsen Burner used for heating, sterilization, and exposing items to flame. The in-flow of gas and thus the heat of the flame can be controlled by adjusting the size of the holes at the base of the tube.

Crucible and lid Used to heat small quantities to very high temperatures

Watch glass Used to hold solids when being weighed or transported Should never be heated

Microspatula Commonly called a spatula Used for moving small amounts of solid from place to place

Buret Used for titrations to measure precisely how much liquid is used

Florence Flask (also known as a round bottom flask or a boiling flask) It is designed for uniform heating Mostly used in distillation experiments

Eye Dropper/Medicine Dropper/Pipette Used to mix or dispense small amounts of liquid, a drop at a time.

Ring and Ring Stand Ring stands are used to hold items being heated Clamps or rings can be used so that the items may be placed above the table for heating by bunsen burners and other items

Wire gauze can be used to support a container (such as a beaker or flask) during heating on a ring clamp and stand.

Stirring Rod Used to mix chemicals

Triangle Used to hold crucibles when they are being heated. Usually sit on ring stand

Beaker may be made of plastic, glass, or Pyrex®. Multipurpose and essential in the lab Used to hold and heat liquids

Graduated Cylinder used for measuring the volumes of liquids can be made of plastic or glass or Pyrex.

Triple Beam Balance is used to accurately measure the mass of an object.

Forceps hand-held instrument for grasping and holding objects

Volumetric Flask Used to measure one specific volume. Most commonly used in mixing solutions where one liter or one half a liter is needed
