A Lesson Plan of The Audio-Lingual Method 2013 Fall Semester- Week 7

Step One Make a brief introduction of The Audio-Lingual Method with a PPT (10 minutes) Tell the classmates (5 minutes) 1. Only the target language is allowed 2. The dialogue you want to teach 3. The 7 drill activities you have designed

Step Two Activity 1: Students follow the instructors to read aloud each line of the dialogue repeatedly (15 minutes) During the activity, you have to 1. make sure that students understand each line of the dialogue and follow the instructor’s model 2. direct the students to take turns to practice the dialogue 3. stop students if they are away from the model

Step Three Activity 2 (backward build-up drill): Invite students to follow the activity (5 minutes) During the activity, you have to 1. break down the troublesome sentence into small parts 2. start with the end of the sentence and have students repeat the last part 3. add a few more words little by little until the entire sentence is repeated

Step Four Activity 3 (chain drill): Invite students to follow the activity (5 minutes) During the activity, you have to 1. give students an opportunity to say the lines individually 2. direct students to take turns to use the expressions in communication with someone else 3. let the last student direct the dialogue to the teacher

Step Five Activity 4 (single-slot substitution drill): Invite students to follow the activity (5 minutes) During the activity, you have to 1. direct the students to repeat a sentence from the dialogue 2. direct students to replace a word or a phrase in the sentence 3. direct students to replace a word or a phrase according the cues the instructor provides

Step Six Activity 5 (multiple-slot substitution drill): Invite students to follow the activity (5 minutes) During the activity, you have to 1. teach students to recognize part of speech of the cue words 2. direct students the place to fit in the cue words or phrases 3. change the cue words or phrases to let students practice putting them in right places with right forms

Step Seven Activity 6 (transformation drill): Invite students to follow the activity (5 minutes) During the activity, you have to 1. ask students to change one type of sentence into another 2. ask students to change affirmative sentences into negative sentences 3. ask students to change active sentences into passive sentences

Step Eight Activity 7 (question and answer drill): Invite students to follow the activity (5 minutes) During the activity, you have to 1. held up a picture (cue) and ask a question with the cue and answer the question by yourself 2. held up the second picture and do the same thing by yourself 3. ask students to practice asking and answering questions with following the cues you held up
