Key Stage 1 SATs information Meeting Tuesday April 25th 2017

Last year there was an overhaul of the Government’s National Curriculum tests in English and Maths (SATs) for both Year 2 and Year 6 children to match the newly updated National Curriculum. Our aim is to provide information on what parents / carers can expect and how you can support your Year 2 children in the run up to SATs at Godolphin.

English SATs Reading Test (lower / higher levels; 30 / 40 minutes) Grammar, Punctuation and Spelling (spelling test 20 minutes) (Grammar, Punctuation, Vocabulary (20 minutes)

English Reading Test Paper 1 In new curriculum greater emphasis on comprehension, not just decoding. Short texts to read with some questions to answer. Single word answers, short sentences or tick a box answers.

Examples of Paper 1 Ants are insects that you can often see in a garden, park or just on the pavement. They usually live underground. Retrieval question: Find and copy two places where you might see an ant. Explanation question: What kind of animal is an ant?

English Reading Test Paper 2 Two different texts and questions are in a separate booklet. Page numbers identified by Qs. All chn sit this one as well – won’t expect all to finish and use our discretion on when to stop. Mixture of ‘tick the box’ and ‘circle the correct answer’ questions as well as written answers. Retrieval of information from text – others will require to explain something or ‘infer’ information from the text.

Grammar, Punctuation, Spelling Paper 1 - spelling 20 words Read out as a word and also as part of a sentence Children write the missing word in the gap in the answer booklet. Based on familiar phonics patterns, increasing in difficulty as move through the 20 words, but also some common exception words. Repeated more than once.

Spelling examples Faster Hannah ran faster than Lee Sunny Yesterday it was very sunny Rainbow I saw a beautiful rainbow

Paper 2 – G,P and V First time this has been tested in Year 2 Knowledge of grammatical terms (noun, verb, adverb, conjunction) and the use of words in the right context. Some questions will require putting the correct punctuation into a sentence or changing the tense.

Examples Write the missing punctuation in this sentence Can you play my favourite tune Put in the correct word to complete this sentence I really don’t like washing my face ____ I have to do it. Or and but

Maths SATs Paper 1 – Arithmetic (20 minutes) Paper 2 – Reasoning (35 minutes)

Paper 1 - Arithmetic Number and calculation skills Basic number facts (number bonds; 2,5,10X tables) Challenging calculations towards the end such as missing number calculations and finding simple fractions of quantities. 3 + 7 = ¼ of 20 = 8 X 10 = 65 + ? = 93

Paper 2 - Reasoning Using maths skills to solve problems T will read questions to children. Can’t help but we can read to them. Earlier questions will be straight forward – later on more challenging. Some are ‘2 step’ problems to solve. Encourage chn to show their working out – whichever ways they are comfortable with.

Examples Sita puts 2 shoes in each of these 7 boxes. How many shoes are there altogether? Complete this number sentence 3 X 8 = 2 X ?

Organisation Do our best to ensure children are not unduly concerned about the tests On the whole, run the tests in classroom – rearrange tables, chn sit at ends, told to try their best, show off what they have learnt, own work and no-one elses. During May – block out a week – tests in morning and relaxed activities in afternoon. Have small breaks for those children who need it and smaller group sizes for those children as well.

Marking and Results Marked by teachers to give an overall judgement on attainment and progress. Scores from SATs go towards children’s overall end of year judgement. Heavily weighted on Teacher Assessment judgements. Working below age related expectations (working towards) Worked at expected level (secure) Working at greater depth (exceeding)

How you can help Listen to the advice and information we give you Read with chn little and often – make it enjoyable and not a chore Any opportunities to practise writing Ensure chn have breakfast Make sure chn go to bed early and have a good nights sleep Don’t take any holidays in May Continue practising number bonds, addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, odd / even numbers, doubles / halves, money, time Please don’t put any undue pressure on chn.
