1 Year 2 Parents Assessment Briefing

2 End of Key Stage Teacher assessment for reading, writing and maths Tests for reading, maths and spelling, punctuation and grammar Tests form part of the teacher assessment judgement For this year only the pupils are being teacher assessed against an interim framework. Tests form a very tiny part of the evidence base for the final judgement – so please don’t spend time practising test papers at home.

3 What is Teacher assessment ?
Teacher assessment is about reviewing a wide range of everyday evidence to make a judgement against a set of criteria. The evidence might include the following: Observations Planning Books and any written work on white boards, jotters etc Tests /mini assessments Writing and maths in other subjects

4 Interim framework standards at KS1
Working towards the expected standard Working at the expected standard Working at greater depth within the expected standard For each of the above there is a set of statements a child must meet. In order to be at the expected standard a child must meet all of the working towards.

5 Tests Must be taken during the month of May No set timetable
Recommended how long a test should take but this is not fixed Small groups or class – school choice Familiar environment Familiar adults – teachers, support staff Tests can be split up into smaller sections Parts of the tests can be read to pupils Forms part of the evidence teachers will use to make their end of year judgement

6 Maths Arithmetic test 25 calculation questions
Later questions get more difficult No apparatus No context Space for workings Approx 20 minutes

7 Maths Reasoning test 35 minutes 30 questions
Context – word problems/diagrams Mix of tick boxes and show method Some 2 marks questions Space for workings Increase difficulty as go through paper

9 Reading paper 1 30 minutes 20 questions
Mix of fiction and factual text One booklet – text and questions Some tick boxes Some ordering of answers Meaning of words Some answers needed in sentences

11 Reading paper 2 40 minutes Text and questions in separate booklets, longer texts One fiction text One factual text Questions – some 2 marks questions More focus on inference

12 Spelling test 20 words Read as part of a sentence
Words get more difficult as test progresses Faster, sunny, kittens, Peaceful ,hurried, teddies

13 Punctuation and Grammar test
20 minute test Mix of adding the correct word to a sentence Changing the punctuation or correcting it Identifying verbs, nouns Gets more difficult Some 1 and 2 mark questions Mix of ticking, circling, ordering,

15 Test results For each of the test taken the children will have a raw score and this will be converted into a scaled score. The scaled scores are then against a threshold. The threshold will be set nationally for all. If your child meets the set threshold then they will have met the expected standard in that test. Remember that the test form part of the teacher assessment.

16 Writing – teacher assessment only
Teacher have a set of statements to assess against for this year only. Spelling is assessed within writing Range of fiction and non fiction writing from across their everyday writing from a range of writing.

17 End of the year reporting
At the end of the year teachers will report as to whether your child has either: Working towards the expected standard Working at the expected standard Working at the expected standard in greater depth

18 How you can support at home
Hear your child read as often as possible and talk to them about their books , ask questions Practice times tables and addition ,subtraction facts Practice spellings Practice spellings within their writing Don’t panic your children – most year 2 children don’t even know they are doing tests
