Delivery 1, 2 or 3 years Registration Moderation (internal/external) External assessment Certification

Regulations for the Conduct of External Assessments – V Certs NCFE Level 1 Certificate in Health and Fitness (601/4662/X) Unit 2 – externally assessed (1 hour 30 mins - set date and time) NCFE Level 2 Certificate in Health and Fitness (601/4534/1) Unit 3 – externally assessed ( 2 hours – set date and time) This is a summary of both levels Each qualification is 120 GLH, with 3 units internally assessed, internally moderated and external moderated, and 1 unit externally assessed. So that means NCFE set and mark the external assessment which is on a set date and time. Dates can be found on our website, but I’ve also printed out the Assessment windows document for you today. For this session only the assessment dates are January and June for Level 1 and January and May for Level 2. As I mentioned earlier the dates going forward will be in xx and xx For the externally assessed unit the learner must be taught covering all ACs in the same way as the internal assessments. The learner can have two attempts at the external assessment - there is a fee for the second attempt. As with the internally assessed units, all ACs have to be met to achieve a Pass. No other evidence counts towards this unit.

The qualification specification… Section 4 – Structure and content Units - Learning outcomes - Assessment criteria - Assessment guidance - Range - Grading Descriptors (Glossary of terms – Section 8) You need to become very familiar with these specs. They contain a lot of important and relevant information which will ensure you are able to deliver the qualification in a manner to maximise the learner’s opportunity to achieve to the best of their ability. I have included a copy of unit xx in your pack so you can have a look at that as I’m talking. The units are broken down into Learning outcomes with Assessment Criteria listed for each LO. Each AC must be achieved at a minimum pass for each unit. There is assessment guidance which gives examples of the type of evidence that could be produced for the unit. Some words in ACs are ranged. This explains more fully what is expected to be covered (eg in Unit 01 1.2 ranges “benefits” – this means physical, social and psychological. We also have the grading descriptors for each AC – this is what you use to grade the internally assessed units and what the examiners use for the externally assessed unit. It is important to be very familiar with the grading descriptors so that any internal assessments you devise yourself provide sufficient stretch and challenge to enable learners to achieve Pass merit and Distinction. When you assess learner work you will be using this to arrive at the grade awarded. You should use it in conjunction with the range and the glossary of terms ( which is in Section 8 of the qual spec)

Feedback Feedback is absolutely key to enable learners to achieve their full potential but it is important to enable independent learning to take place and for learner’s work to be a reflection of that and not very similar across a cohort. Need to bear in mind the importance of the key points made on the slide because when the work is externally moderated this will be considered. This is included in section 2 – Assessment and Moderation

Final Qualification Grade As I mentioned earlier, the system will automatically aggregate the highest banked grade for each unit to give a final overall grade. This grid shows you the combinations (any units) so you can refer to it to see the progress a learner is making and to flag what is needed to achieve the grade being aimed for.

Internal Assessment Tasks. NCFE generic tasks Creation of tasks Portfolio of evidence Mapping to grading criteria Role of the Assessor Assessment checking service Talk through the internal assessment and the option to use NCFE generic tasks We have guidance to support them in creating their own or they have the option to create a portfolio of evidence if they wish All tasks should be mapped to the Assessment Criteria and grading criteria to ensure candidates have the opportunity to achieve and centres also need to build in some stretch for candidates to achieve higher grades. Assessment checking service We have recently started this service which offers a review of your assessments for the internally assessed units. You can have one unit reviewed for free. Any other units would be charged. I’ve included a flyer for this service in your pack. Talk through the role of the assessor in grading the candidate evidence. Refer to the new assessment checking service soon to be available.

What is the IQA Role? 1st line of Quality Assurance Checking schemes of work/internal assessment tasks Sampling Plan Support for Assessor Standardisation   What is the IQA Role? First line of quality assurance- not just about sampling completed learner work. First year 50% thereafter 20-30% Check schemes of work; internally written assessment tasks; sample work – all units all assessors all learners. Provide recorded feedback to assessor to identify areas of good practice and those that need improving eg. if grades not agreed with , if portfolios not organised if assessor is not feedback appropriately to the learners. So I’m going to hand you over to Becky now who is going to go through the some of the content of the qualification.

A teacher’s perspective Accessibility 75% internal assessment, 25 % external assessment Learner engagement Practical Portfolio evidence Separate unit folders, scaffolding ONLY to aid teaching and learning not assessment. Scaffolding can only be used in teaching and learning not as part of the formal assessment– Any scaffolding would be picked up at moderation

We have reached the point of questions We have some already which we will answer now… Any more? Thank you for taking the time to join us today, if you need to contact anyone within the Schools tea our contact information is now on screen. Have a great day. Goodbye.
