Universal Needs - Maslow Where Are We Now? Housing Changes Universal Needs - Maslow House & Home Family Life Cycles – Ages and Stages Universal Design

What is needed to make a home accessible? Universal Design

What is Universal Design? Designing interiors and products to accommodate all people with a variety of requirements, needs, and abilities.

What is Universal Design? Universal design acknowledges that people are of different sizes, ages, and abilities. We know universal design is working if no special adaptations are required in the home regardless if the occupant’s needs change.

Barrier Free Design Living spaces that are designed without structures that would prevent access by people with special needs

Adaptable Design Design features that are temporary and can be easily changed. For example, grab bars by toilet

Exterior Ramp Ground level entrance Wide door Paved driveway Safety rails Textures must be stable, firm, slip-resistant,

Question??? What rooms in the home are more important to consider when discussing universal design?

Interior Technology for controls Lights/plugs lowered Lots of open space “open concept” Doors/halls wide Elevator/chair lift on stairs Doorways flush with floor One story living Lever style door handles Rocker light switches that need little manual dexterity and work using the back of the hand or elbow

Kitchen Lower counters Stove top counter Oven open to side Textures and shapes (visual) Lights for appliances (auditory)

Bathroom Turning space Grab bars Pedestal sink Level shower stall Seat in shower Non-skid surfaces

Scavenger Hunt Using the Scavenger Hunt guide you are going to assess how FHS is doing in it’s UNIVERSAL DESIGN As a school we should be universal for all students Go to each area indicated and write down what is universally designed and/or what the limitations are in that area of the school Be back in __20___ minutes

Scavenger Hunt When you return, take a moment to write a reflection based on your findings. Is FHS a suitable space for the disabled? The rest of your time needs to be spent working on Question 3 in your text on page 37….room drawing

Apply Your Knowledge… Page 37 #3 in textbook Use white paper and be sure to label and explain your universal design elements Hand in your design
