Kentisbeare Primary School Spelling Workshop

Aims To discuss how and why the teaching of spelling has changed. To show you ways that you can support your child at home. To answer any questions you have about spelling.

Why? Nationally, spelling has become a difficult area to tackle in recent years. Children are not always remembering the spellings set for them and applying their knowledge of spelling and patterns within their writing.

Is learning ‘weekly set spellings’ working? What impact is it having?

How has spelling changed? ACTIVE LEARNERS! A set of spellings will be provided. (This will differ depending on each year group) Children will practice only a set few spellings each week using a range of activities. Repetition and practice of these spellings in a variety of ways will be important!

TESTING! There will be no set spelling tests at the end of the week. Your child’s progress with spelling will be continuously and repeatedly monitored on a daily basis.

Spelling in the classroom Every day your child will have phonics (and/or) spelling. We teach using ‘Letters and Sounds’ and ‘Spelling Pathway’. • Lessons will include a range of activities surrounding the spelling of common words and spelling patterns. Opportunities to apply into sentences. Phoneme frames, sound buttons, full circle, countdown, flashcards, buried treasure

Important aspects for learning, practising and applying spelling. Red to respond pen. Have a go and use what you know. Underlining words they are unsure of. Correcting words that are misspelt.

To be a good speller we need to be a good reader. Reading To be a good speller we need to be a good reader.

How can you help at home? Practice spellings from the list provided using a range of games and activities. Apply these spellings in sentences. Continue to read with your child frequently. Allow children to have a go but encourage and support correcting words. (Especially those they should already know!) Discuss and ask questions surrounding known and unknown words.

Questions for children when tackling spellings. What do you already know? What part of this word are you sure about? What part are you struggling with? What patterns can you see? What looks right?

Helpful tips…. Said you your Where = where is the h in where? Look for patterns. Look for sounds. Create sayings. Said you your Where = where is the h in where? When = there is a hen in when. What = there is a hat in what. Because = Big elephants can always use small exits. Some come Would should could Door poor floor Great break steak

Any questions?
