Thank you all for coming. Our aim today is to help equip you, as a parent, to support your child in preparation for the Phonics Screening Test coming up in June. Please feel free to ask any questions. The KS1 Team.

3 In school, we follow the Letters and Sounds programme
In school, we follow the Letters and Sounds programme. Letters and Sounds is a phonics resource published by the Department for Education and Skills which consists of six phases. Your children spends minutes per day in a phonics lesson.

5 What does a Phonics lesson look like?
Revisit/review Flashcards to practice phonemes learnt so far. Teach Teach new phoneme air Practice Buried treasure air, zair, fair, hair, lair, pair, vair, sair, thair Apply Read or write captions: The girl had a long hair. He went to the fair.

6 Phase 2 Set 1: s, a, t, p Set 2: i, n, m, d Set 3: g, o, c, k
Set 4: ck, e, u, r Set 5: h, b, f, ff, l, ll, ss

7 Phase 3 Set 6: j, v, w, x Set 7: y, z, zz, qu
Consonant digraphs: ch, sh, th, ng Vowel digraphs: ai, ee, oa, oo, ar, or, ur, ow, oi, er Trigraphs: ear, air, ure, igh. Some children are still working at this phase. If they do not pass this year they will have chance to re-sit in Year 2.

8 Phase 4 This phase consolidates all the children have learnt in the previous phases. Blending

9 Phase 5 Children will be taught new graphemes and alternative pronunciations for these graphemes. Vowel digraphs: wh, ph, ay, ou, ie, ea, oy, ir, ue, aw, ew, oe, au Split digraphs: a_e, e_e, i_e, o_e, u_e The majority of children are working at phase 5.

10 Phase 6 The focus is on learning spelling rules for suffixes.

20 Work with your child revising each sound.
If they struggle with a particular grapheme, click on the Mr Thorne link on the KS1 and search for a video about that grapheme.

21 All year one children will be sent a username and password to log onto this game at home. This is a much loved game and helps children revise the taught graphemes through reading games. Children who were invited to attend the phonics club will be introduced to this during their club. Make sure you get your child’s password today!
