How to Describe Matter

Unit Standards 5.P.2A.1 Analyze and interpret data from observations and measurements of the physical properties of matter (including volume, shape, movement, and spacing of particles) to explain why matter can be classified as a solid, liquid, or gas.

How can you describe matter? Property- is something that can be observed about an object or group of objects. (Think about your senses.) Matter- is anything that has mass and volume.

How can you describe matter? Mass- is the amount of matter in an object. Mass can be measured on an equal pan balance. Gravity pulls on the standard pieces (weights) and the object measuring. When the balance levels out, the amount of matter in the standard pieces and the object are the same. Mass is measured in kilograms or grams. 1 kilogram=1,000 grams

How can you describe matter? Weight- how strongly gravity pulls on an object. If an object has more mass it will have more weight. Weight is measured in Newtons (N). 1 Newton (N) = 0.225 pounds (lbs)

How can you describe matter? Gravity is greater on planets with more mass, so an object’s weight is dependent on the planet it is on. The objects mass will stay the same…anywhere it goes.

How can you describe matter? Volume- how much space the object takes up. The volume of liquids are measured in milliliters (mL). The volume of solids are measured in cubic centimeters (cm^3). A volume of 1cm^3 equals 1 mL.
