Ferrara MECHANICAL SUPPORT for forward tracking detectors Federico Evangelisti INFN - Ferrara GSI – 2-6 march 2009

GSI – 2-6 march 2009 Federico Evangelisti Ferrara We have studied the mechanical support for the tracking stations DC5 and DC6. DC6 DC5 (top view) GSI – 2-6 march 2009 Federico Evangelisti

GSI – 2-6 march 2009 Federico Evangelisti The support is composed of two principal parts: main frame (shown in dark green); straw tube module supports (drawers). Ferrara drawer main frame (DC6) main frame drawer GSI – 2-6 march 2009 Federico Evangelisti

GSI – 2-6 march 2009 Federico Evangelisti The main frame consists of a chassis realized with steel standard profiles: IPE 240 (IPE UNI 5398-240) for the upper and lower horizontal supports; HE 120 (HE UNI 5397-120) for the legs. The structure is completely disassembled in order to facilitate the transport. Ferrara HE 120 IPE 240 HE 120 (DC6) GSI – 2-6 march 2009 Federico Evangelisti

GSI – 2-6 march 2009 Federico Evangelisti Ferrara The straw tube wall is divided in two parts around the beam line. Each half is, in its turn, divided in two parts (drawers). On each drawer two layers are installed (vertical and tilting). rails Layer 1 Layer 2 (DC6) Layer 3 left drawers right drawers Layer 4 (DC6 - side view) front drawer back drawer GSI – 2-6 march 2009 Federico Evangelisti

GSI – 2-6 march 2009 Federico Evangelisti Ferrara telescopic rails Every drawer is connected to the main frame with two telescopic rails. RAILS CHARACTERISTICS: closed length (L): 2000 mm extension (D): 3000 mm max load: 220 kg weight: 86,2 kg (DC6) GSI – 2-6 march 2009 Federico Evangelisti

GSI – 2-6 march 2009 Federico Evangelisti Ferrara ASSEMBLY PROCEDURE Pull out the drawer; Put the modules on the drawer (vertical and tilting) like Cracow method ; Straw tube module (from J.Smyrski presentation GSI 8.12.08) Put in the drawer. GSI – 2-6 march 2009 Federico Evangelisti

GSI – 2-6 march 2009 Federico Evangelisti MAIN FRAME DIMENSIONS AND DEFORMATIONS Ferrara max displacement in the middle: 3mm (DC6)(*) ACTIVE AREA ACTIVE AREA Weight structure without straw tube modules: DC6=1950 kg – DC5=1650 kg Weight straw tube layers (signal wires and gas tubes included): DC6=250 kg – DC5=200 kg ACTIVE AREA (*) structural verifications by Ing. V. Carassiti GSI – 2-6 march 2009 Federico Evangelisti

GSI – 2-6 march 2009 Federico Evangelisti Ferrara drawer open max displacement 5mm GSI – 2-6 march 2009 Federico Evangelisti

GSI – 2-6 march 2009 Federico Evangelisti Ferrara UNDER INVESTIGATION CONNECTIONS TUBES AROUND THE BEAM PIPE; ALIGNMENT TO THE BEAM AXIS; OTHER PROFILES AND MATERIALS IN ORDER TO MAKE THE STRUCTURE LIGHTER. TO BE CHECKED POSSIBILITY OF ASSEMBLY ON SUPPORT PLATFORM; COMPATIBILITY OF THE DIMENSIONS WITH THE CLEARANCE BETWEEN MAGNET AND RICH FOR DC5 AND BETWEEN RICH AND EMC FOR DC6. GSI – 2-6 march 2009 Federico Evangelisti

GSI – 2-6 march 2009 Federico Evangelisti Ferrara CONCLUSIONS THE PROPOSED STRUCTURE HAS THE FOLLOWING ADVANTAGES: IT IS INDEPENDENT FROM OTHER PARTS OF THE EXPERIMENT (DIPOLE MAGNET, RICH, EMC); THE DRAWER METHOD MAKES IT EASIER TO MOUNT AND TO DISMOUNT STRAW TUBE MODULES; FOR MAINTENANCE ON THE STRAW TUBE MODULES IT IS NOT NECESSARY TO REMOVE THE BEAM PIPE. GSI – 2-6 march 2009 Federico Evangelisti
