YOUR VOICE. YOUR GOALS. YOUR VISION. YOUR PASSION CHARTER A CHAPTER www.amsa.org YOUR VOICE. YOUR GOALS. YOUR VISION. YOUR PASSION

Make it Official Chartering an AMSA chapter is easy! STEP 1 - Recruit 5 active AMSA members to get the chapter up and running. STEP 2 - Draft chapter Constitution & Bylaws. STEP 3 - Submit a charter application and a copy of your Constitution & Bylaws. STEP 4 - AMSA’s House of Delegates or Board of Trustees will review the application. If everything looks good, welcome to the family! Here are a few tips for each step …

Step 1 Recruit 5 active AMSA members to get the chapter up and running. If you’re considering chartering a chapter, it’s likely you already have a group of students interested in AMSA. If not, chat with students or professors to find people that are also passionate about becoming a physician. All 5 founding students must be AMSA National members when submitting the charter application. Join as an “at large” member while we set up your chapter information.

Step 2 Draft chapter Constitution & Bylaws. We have made this super easy by providing a template. www.amsa.org/chapters/charter Review the template, update information and adjust policies as needed. Some chapters modify the leadership structure or don’t charge local dues. You decide. Find an advisor and ask them to review the Constitution & Bylaws. It’s a good idea to have a mentor that can support your chapter throughout the year.

Step 3 Submit a charter application and a copy of your Constitution & Bylaws. The application can be found and completed online. www.amsa.org/chapters/charter Have your school info handy, know who is acting as your Chapter President, have info for any other chapter officers, know who the founding members are. Attach Constitution & Bylaws and submit. AMSA will review and be in touch.

Step 4 AMSA’s House of Delegates or Board of Trustees will review the application. AMSA will set up a chapter profile and attach your founding members to it. Your chapter will now appear in the list of schools students choose from when joining. Your application will be shared with the VP of Internal Affairs and the House of Delegates or the Board of Trustees. You will be notified when the charter has been approved.

Celebrate!

Spread the Word More members means more activity, more support, and more fun! Set up a chapter website or Facebook page. Participate in campus tabling events and work with your student affairs office to recruit new members. Work with AMSA partners to host events or provide special offers to your members. Connect with your AMSA Regional Director and collaborate with other chapters.

Extra Support There are lots of resources and AMSA leaders are ready to help. Connect with your AMSA Regional Director. www.amsa.org/about/national-leadership Collaborate with other chapters. www.amsa.org/chapters/active Contact the National AMSA Office www.amsa.org - members@amsa.org Tel: 703.620.6600
