Using Natural Resources Chapter 10

Living and nonliving things support life on Earth

Natural Resources Natural resources – are supplies that nature provides. They are both living and non living things ALL living things depend on natural resources We use plant and animal resources for food Earth also gives us resources that we use to make the products we need EVERYTHING we EAT, USE, OR BUY has been made from or is a natural resource

Energy Source Non- renewable Renewable water wind solar Wood Fossil Fuels Petroleum Coal Natural Gas

Renewable Resources CAN be replaced

Energy the sun gives off Solar Energy Energy the sun gives off

Soil – A Renewable Resource Soil covers MOST of Earth’s land surface Many animals make their homes in soil Trees and plants need soil to live NON LIVING RESOURCES that EARTH RENEWS

How is Soil Renewed? Weathering, Erosion, and Deposition work together to form soil WEATHERING wears down EROSION deposits the weathered material into new places

Ingredients in Soil Pieces of different weathered rock (IMPORTANT) Decaying plants Animal remains Humus – decomposing material, dark brown Air Minerals FULL OF LIFE!

Living Things in Soil Burrowing animals and organisms They break down the plant and animal remains into nutrients the plants can use as food

Different soil are made from different kinds of rocks and minerals The amount of humus changes the way it FEELS Different minerals can change the color Soil just inches apart can be made of different materials

Layers of Soil

CLAY Made of the smallest particles Can be different colors because of the materials is it Some feels sticky

SILT Made of slightly larger particles Feels smooth

SAND Made of the largest particles Contains particles from different materials Most common mineral – quartz Broken shells Color depends on the materials in it

Soil for Growing Plants Good soil for plants is the right mix of clay, silt, sand, and humus Without these materials plants can not soak up the nutrients

Soil a Renewable Resource Good farming can replace the nutrients naturally Farmers can plants that put the nutrients back in the soil Soil itself takes longer to replace Only a few CENTIMETERS of topsoil is renewed every 1,000 years

Other Uses for Soil Clay is used to make tile, bricks, and pottery Clay is also used when making paper to make it strong and shiny Sand is used to make concrete, glass, and other things

Renewable Energy Resources Almost all of the energy we use is from the sun We also use powerful forces of wind and moving water for energy All are RENEWABLE

Solar Energy Solar cell- changes the energy from the sun into electrical energy or heat energy Groups of solar cells make solar panels Can be used for many big jobs …power satellites Solar heat – the sun heats water in the solar panels

Wind Energy Has been used for thousands of years Windmills can be used to run machinery, pump water, and produce electric

Water Energy Long ago, people built water wheels to use falling water to do work Moving water has lots of energy Today we use this energy to power machines that produce electricity We store water in a dam that convert it to water energy

Energy Source Non- renewable Renewable water wind solar Wood Fossil Fuels Petroleum Coal Natural Gas

Nonrenewable Energy Resources Nonrenewable resources – are supplies that exist in limited amounts are sued much faster than they can be replaced in nature People use these resources to provide energy and make products

Ore Ore – is a rock rich in minerals that can be removed from the Earth Nonrenewable mineral resources are commonly found in ores

Fossil Fuels Fossil fuels – are burned to produce useful hear Made from organisms that lived LONG AGO COAL, NATURAL GAS, OIL Petroleum – the real name for oil

How Fossil Fuels were made Made from organisms (bacteria, algae…) that changed sunlight into energy Their bodies stored the energy they didn’t use After they died, their remains and the unused energy settled on the sea bed Over millions of years they changed into oil and other fossil foils

Impact of Fossil Fuels Mining (digging up) of fossil fuels is bad for the environment Most oil is at the bottom of the ocean, which can be risky There are chances of oil spills , which cause pollution and other serious problems

When they burn, they put chemicals into the air Increases the amount of carbon dioxide in the air Can cause acid rain that damages buildings and roads

How to make resources last longer We are running out of our nonrenewable resources If we keep using fossil fuels we will damage the environment We conserve energy, be careful of how much we are using Use renewable resources

Methods of Conservation Conservation – means using only what you need as efficiently as possible You can reduce energy in MANY WAYS! Walk or ride bike Turn off lights Do not leave water taps running

Recycling Recycling – saving, collecting, or using materials again instead of treating them as waste Glass, cardboard, newspaper, paper, aluminum, tin, steel, and some plastics
