What are human values? Human Values Basic normal values one ought to posses to live as a citizen or as a person Foundations: A few key principles compose the foundations of human values upon which societies have been established

Foundations: Human Values To innate (inborn) dignity of human life Respect and consideration for the other Interaction between humankind and environment and thus the need to care for and preserve the earth

Morals,values, & ethics Morals: Concerned with the judgment of goodness or badness of human action and character Arising from conscience or a sense of right and wrong Being or acting in accordance with standards and precepts of goodness Instructive of what is good or evil. Two husband & two wives

Ethical/ ethic definition The discipline dealing with what is right or wrong or with moral duty and obligation A group of moral principles or set of values A particular theory or system of moral values The principles of conduct governing an individual or a profession; standards of behaviors

The character or the ideals of character manifested by a group or people Ethical: Self position, ones own condition or place, custom. Being in accord with approved standards of behavior or socially or professionally accepted code

Values Characteristics: Values are bipolar with a positive and negative pole such as pleasant, painful, easy, difficult, strong, weak, rich, poor beautiful, ugly, true, false, good and bad. Positive – preferred , negative not preferred and called disvalue.

Ethics From Greek word ‘Ethos’ – means the characteristic spirit or attitude of a community, people or system Ethics is the “Art of human living” “Science of man as a gentleman” End product of ethics should be ease in being the good man in every circumstance. Defined as the discipline that deals with what is good and bad and with moral duty and obligation.

Teachers of ethics Taught by mother, father, teachers, coaches, friends peers or clients. Relation to other studies: Psychology and ethics: deals human behavior, how they ought to behave Anthropology and ethics: origin and development of human customs without passing any judgment Laws and ethics: permitted or prohibited by civil law

Work Ethics Cultural norm that advocates being personally accountable and responsible for the work that one does and is based on belief that work has intrinsic (core) value Elements: Interpersonal skills Initiative and Being dependable

Interpersonal skills Include habits, attitudes, manners, appearance and behaviors – we use around other people. This skills begins early in life and is influenced by family, friends, our observations of the world around us. Mostly by parents. Appearance and personality traits are genes. To improve this skills one must aware of what we like from the perspective of other people who interact with others.

Initiative Very important characteristics of information age workers. Direct supervision is not a feature of the modern workplace. Without initiative procrastination (postpone) and missed opportunities can become real problem. Sometimes poor performance leads to loss of job without any second chance. Being dependable ( loyal) Most highly sought ( wanted) after traits in present trend. Work ethics- honesty, reliability and being on time

Integrity Refers to quality of person’s character. When it is applied to objects, integrity refers to wholeness, intactness or purity of a thing. What is to be a person of integrity? Two fundamentals intuitions 1.
