Characteristics of Good Mental/Emotional Health Sense of Belonging Purpose Positive Outlook Autonomy Self-Esteem Personal Consistency We will be discussing 6 different characteristics of positive mental/emotional health In your notes you will record (1) the definition, (2) the benefits of having each characteristic (3) personal information (4) create a text box for an activity we will do after you have gathered information

Sense of Belonging Belonging means having an emotional attachment to other people around you. Belonging provides comfort and assurance promoting stability and confidence Your personal sense of belonging…(answer the following questions in a complete sentence) One adult that you trust and you are attached to Two other people who are important to you and who you are important to Rate (On a scale of 0 – 5)

Sense of purpose means that you recognize your own value and importance A sense of purpose enables you to set and achieve goals and engage in activities that are personally rewarding Your personal sense of purpose: (answer in complete sentences) One short term goal that you have One long term goal that you have Identify an activity that you are involved in OR a responsibility that you fulfill on a regular basis OR a job that you have – etc. Rate Sense of Purpose

Positive Outlook Positive outlook means that you are able to see the bright side of things Positive outlook gives you hope, reduces your stress, increases your energy, and promotes success Your personal outlook level Are you an optimist or a pessimist? Name one area which you know you feel negatively about Name one area in your life that you feel very positively about Rate

Autonomy Autonomy means having the confidence to make choices for your own life Autonomy creates a sense of independence Your personal level of autonomy: Name an area in your life where you are making decisions and practicing autonomy Name an area in your life where you wish you had more autonomy or decision making power Rate

Personal consistency means that you live according to your values, beliefs and convictions Personal consistency increases self-respect and self-esteem Your personal values – what’s important to you and how you want to live your life : 2 internal values (Ex. Integrity, kindness, respect) 1 external value (Ex. Environment, family, possessions) Rate Personal Consistency

Positive self-esteem is all about how you “feel” about yourself Positive self esteem enables people to accept challenges and take the future in-stride Your level of self-esteem – most of the time: - One thing you do well - One thing you like about yourself - One thing you would like to change Rate Positive Self-Esteem

Signs of Good Mental/Emotional Health Activity: On the next slide, you will see a list of 12 different behaviors As a group discuss each behavior and decide which characteristic it would best fit under – place it in the text box you create for the characteristic After you have categorized them, record them in the appropriate text box in your notes Use a (+) if it is a behavior you engage in the majority of the time. Use a (–) if it is a behavior you rarely engage in. Use a (+/- ) if you engage in the behavior about half the time.

Behaviors: You are… Realistic about strengths and weakness Responsible for your own behavior Avoid high risk behaviors (ex. Drugs) Open-minded, flexible, able to see both sides Fun-loving and able to relax Respect the needs of others Respect your own needs Respect each person’s value as a human being Invest time and energy into nurturing relationships Able to express emotions in a “healthy” way Able to put your talents and abilities to good use Able to view change as a challenge and opportunity

Checking for understanding Pair up with a partner who has a similar story Read the success story out loud together or silently Identify the how the person demonstrated each of the positive characteristics

Self-Evaluation Examine your personal mental and emotional health Answer the questions and turn them in to your teacher.

How Can I Improve My Self-Esteem? Reading: How Can I Improve My Self-Esteem Inserted into the reading are questions or activities for you to complete. By making a text personal you also make it memorable. Do some group discussion on questions # 8, 13, 14, 17 and 18

Self-Esteem Activity On one piece of paper: Write down anything that you don’t like about yourself. Write down anything that your inner voice criticizes Crumple it up – throw it away

Self-Esteem Activity On the other piece of paper: Write down 2 or 3 of your strengths Write down 2 or 3 things that you are grateful or thankful for Write down 2 things you can do to improve your self-esteem. Fold it up – put it somewhere safe
