Enhancing the Curriculum through Computer Simulation and Excel Data Management Carolyn Rulli Chem 502 – Information Technology May, 2004

Research Question How can available technology be used to enhance the learning in my Chemistry classes?

Subjects 55 Honors Chemistry students 35 students were simultaneously enrolled in Computer Applications Course. Excel graphing is taught in the 3rd marking period of Computer Applications.

Method - Technology Survey Initial Technology Survey indicated that 5 out of 55 students used computer graphing for school projects.

Method – Graphing Skills Assessment

Method – Lab Simulation

Technology Computer on Wheels (COW)

Method - Excel Data Management

Method – Excel Data Management

Method – Cooling Curves

Results All students successfully completed both lab reports. Students coached their peers. All students were actively engaged in the lesson.

Curriculum changes for next year: Introduction of Excel in the Computer Applications Course in early fall. Coordinated Chemistry and Computer Applications project. Use of Excel throughout the Chemistry curriculum.
