1 Integrating Technology:
Using your Primary IT Curriculum with Core Subjects

2 Beliefs Technology can enhance the teaching and learning process
Technology use is meaningful when applied strategically to increase student achievement Students learn about technology by using technology Students learn about technology by using technology Technology use is meaningful when applied to practical use Technology enhances the teaching and learning process Engages Students Accommodates learning styles Brings a variety of media to the learning experience Powerful problem-solving and communication tools

3 Planning Process Lesson Plan Objectives & Content
Materials & Assessment Instructional Strategies & Student Activities Objectives & Content

4 1 2 3 4 The Planning Steps Identify a Subject/Topic to be taught
Design Project, Lessons or Activities 3 Identify Opportunities to Use Information Technology 4 Identify IT skills students will need to bring to the learning experience Appendix D: Opportunities for ICT

5 Step 1: Identify subject, strand, or module to be taught
Example: Science – Biology 2Be2 Objective – Understand ways to care for the environment

6 Step 2:DesignLesson/Activities
What can my students do to help them gain skills and content knowledge? Example: Take a walk and point out the types of trash found along the way. Then collect and review vocabulary during discussions on appropriate ways of disposing waste. Construct a roster of duties for keeping the classroom clean & tidy (e.g.: participate in recycling lunch waste) Discuss consequences of and solutions for waste littering other environments (eg: beaches/shoreline, oceans, parks, etc)

7 Step 3: Identify Opportunities for IT
Where can I integrate technology to enhance the learning process? Where can I give my students the opportunity to increase their skills with technology? Example: Use online/interactive activities to develop their understanding of how to care for the environment Visit the KBB website at Watch film clips related to caring for the environment and discuss with others Take a digital camera along on the walk. Use the pictures in the student work Interactive KBB Movie

8 Step 4: Identify IT Skills in Curriculum Document
What IT objectives will I be covering? Which skills will the students have the opportunity to develop? Example: A - Navigates age appropriate software (simulation) A - Operates a variety of technologies (video controls, digital camera) B - Use computer applications (word processor)

9 1 2 3 4 Example: Science Identify a Subject/Topic to be taught
Biology 2Be2 Understand ways to care for the environment 2 Design Project, Lessons or Activities Take a nature walk; collect and review vocabulary during discussions; construct a roster of classroom duties Discuss consequences of and solutions for waste littering 3 Identify Opportunities to Use Information Technology Use interactive activities on how to care for the environment Visit the KBB website Watch video related to topic Take a along on the walk. Use a digital camera to document the walk in student written work 4 Identify IT skills students will need to bring to the learning experience A - Navigates age appropriate software (simulation) A - Operates a variety of technologies (video controls, digital camera) B - Use computer applications (word processor)

10 Example: English & Social Studies
1 Identify a Subject/Topic to be taught Reading 4Rn7 Distinguish between fact and opinion Social Studies SS.P4.H3c Demonstrate an understanding that people in different times and places view the world differently. 2 Design Project, Lessons or Activities Students read Scourge of Slavery from 5 Centuries and Conduct research for opposing views of slavery to uncover and document differing opinions. 3 Identify Opportunities to Use Information Technology Students can use tables in the word processor to organize information according to point of view or fact or opinion They can use the Internet to conduct research. 4 Identify IT skills students will need to bring to the learning experience Work cooperatively with peers and others when using technology (D) Format text using a word processor (C) Navigate websites to locate information(A)

11 1 2 3 4 Example: Mathematics Identify a Subject/Topic to be taught
Ma P3 (3N) Numbers and the number system and calculation 2 Design Project, Lessons or Activities Have the students work with manipulatives to uncover multiples of 2, 3, 4, 5 and build number charts. 3 Identify Opportunities to Use Information Technology Students can use the IWB to explore number patterns (multiples) using virtual manipulatives and create number charts using a spreadsheet Hundreds Chart 4 Identify IT skills students will need to bring to the learning experience Solve problems using spreadsheet software(C) Operate a variety of technologies (A)

12 Using Your Curriculum Documents
Use the IT curriculum as a guide to identify the performances and skills expected of students at a particular level Use CIE TG Section 5 and Appendix D for ideas to integrate technology into other subject areas Use the Technology Integration Tool to assist with lesson planning

13 IT Assessment How do we know what they know? Product Assessment:
Portfolio containing computer generated documents designed for a variety of purposes: Stories pictures help manuals Reports graphs website collections Letters presentations movies, surveys, etc. Performance Assessment: Ongoing Observation of: operation of equipment operation of software Keyboarding cooperation collaboration, etc.

14 What can it look like? Planning for Step 2
DEGREES OF ACTIVE LEARNING WITH TECHNOLOGY What can it look like? Planning for Step 2 Teacher uses the technology ENTRY ADOPTION Mostly teacher directed but students have some choice as they learn a variety of technologies ADAPTION Students use the technology according to teacher direction Students can make their own choices about when, how and which technologies they will use INFUSION TRANSFORMATION Students have technology readily available to them and use it as they see fit to facilitate their learning, collaboration and to express their creativity.

15 Technology Use & Teaching Style
Traditional Classrooms 21st Century Classrooms High use of teacher centred instructional approaches High use of student centred instructional strategies Technology in the hands of teacher Technology in the hands of students Entry Adoption Adaption Infusion Transformation Teacher Expertise with Instructional Technology
