1 BOARD ENDS POLICY REVIEW E-2 Students will demonstrate a strong foundation in academic skills by working toward the Kansas Standards of Excellence in reading, writing, mathematics, science and social studies and by a locally developed assessment in technology. Mathematics Testing Results 2000-2001 School Year USD 244 Board of Education Burlington, KS February 12, 2001

2 Iowa Test of Basic Skills n Nationally-Normed Test n Tests curriculum items most commonly taught in classroom across the nation. n Given to all 1st through 8th and 12th grade students. n Testing window is the first two weeks of October.

3 n “All” includes every student enrolled. Scores of special education students are omitted in the “General Education” averages. n The space between the blue lines approximate the “average range”. n Grade levels scoring within the average range - 2nd, 4th, 5th, 6th, and 7th. n Grade levels scoring above the average range - 1st, 8th, and 12th. n There are no grade levels scoring below the average range. n There are very little differences between the scores of “all” students and “general education” students at most grade levels. The greatest difference appears in grades 6 and 7.

4 n The lowest scores at each grade level except 2nd and 3rd were in computation. n 3rd grade Problem Solving/Data Interpretation and Computation scores are above the average range. n 8th grade Concepts and Estimation scores are above the average range. n 1st grade Problem Solving and Data Interpretation Scores are above the average range. n 5th grade computation scores fell below the average range.

5 n The greatest percent of students scoring in the upper quartile are at grades 1, 8, and 12. n The greatest percent of students scoring in the lower quartile are at grades 2, 5, and 6.

6 n Male/Female comparisons vary depending on grade level. n Low SES students consistently scored below high SES students. n High SES groups scored above the average range in grades 1, 3, 4, 7, 8, and 12. n No high SES groups scored below the average range. n Low SES students scored above the average range in grade 3. n Low SES groups scored below the average range in grades 2, 6, 7, and 8.

7 n Scores over the past three years indicate improvement trends in grades 1, 3, and 8. n In following cohort groups, the current 4th grade class scores indicate an improvement trend over the past three years.

8 Kansas Math Assessment n Mandated by the Kansas State Board of Education n Measures achievement toward the Kansas Curricular Standards for Mathematics n Given to all 4th, 7th, and 10th grade students. n Testing window is in the month of March. n The 2000 Assessment is baseline data.

9 n USD 244 4th and 10th grade students scored slightly below the state average. n USD 244 7th grade students scored slightly above the state average.

10 n 4th and 10th grade students scored higher on the knowledge questions than the application questions. n 7th grade scores are about the same on both types of questions.

11 n This is the data that the Kansas Department of Education uses to determine whether or not a school has achieved the standard of excellence. n All students are included in this data. n According to Kansas standards, no USD 244 building is currently at the standard of excellence in mathematics. n The graph on the right illustrates KSDE requirements for the standard of excellence in mathematics.

12 n Gender differences are not significant across the three grade levels. n High SES students scored more that 10% higher than Low SES students at all three grade levels.

13 n Gender differences are very slight at all three grade levels. n Low SES students scores are lower than the High SES students across all three grade levels.

14 n Students taking college prep courses (Core) scored higher than those not taking the college prep courses (Less). n Total group ACT scores show an upward trend over the past 5 years. n BHS students in the “less” group scored a couple of points below the state and national averages.

15 n In the year 2000, BHS students passing advanced math classes was about eighteen percent less that the average percent across the state.
