MESA WORKSHOP Potential Collaboration between University of Mauritius (UoM) and MESA THEMA V. Proag (Dr.) – Faculty of Engineering & M. D. Nowbuth (Dr.) – Faculty of Ocean Studies

Introduction UoM is the main public university in Mauritius, created since 1965. Six Faculties: Agriculture; Social Studies & Humanities; Engineering; Science; Law & Management; Ocean Studies (since 2014)

Why are we here? UoM will be partnering with the National Disaster Risk Reduction Management Centre (NDRRMC), Ministry of Environment, Sustainable Development, and Disaster and Beach Management - MESA-FLOOD project as from 2016. NDRRMC – focal point UoM – In charge of training and research to build capacity in water related risks and disasters.

Eo related work at uom Remote Sensing and GIS – BSc(Hons) Physics BSc (Hons) Town & Country Planning Diploma in Land Surveying BEng(Hons) Civil Engineering BSc Agriculture BSc Agriscience BSc Archaelogy NEW – BSc(Hons) Geomatics , MSc Geomatics, MSc Climate Change Adaptation & Risk Reduction to be offered as from August 2016 NEAR FUTURE – MSc Urban Planning; MSc Climate Change & Sustainable Development

RESEARCH AREAS Planning Tool – development permits Water quality monitoring – inland and in the lagoon Disaster risk reduction – mapping of risk areas Utilities – water, electricity, wastewater Agricultural Services – GIS database

Mesa & services of interest to mauritius and uom Flood Services Drought Services Agricultural Services – not under the collaboration for the MESA-FLOOD but for UoM only. Wild fires – localised only

Collaboration potential..1/2 Teaching – Existing Modules & Short professional courses (Use of teaching materials – MESA & SANSA) Research – Mauritius being small, there will be a need to refine the numerical model developed under the MESA project for Mauritius – at catchment and sub catchment levels. There will be need for model calibration and validation with on site field data – in collaboration with NDRRMC.

Collaboration potential..2/2 Curriculum Development – new programmes Reporting at Government level - for Status report on regular basis For Decision making during pre disaster events Post disaster – status report

OTHERS Organisation of Regional and National conference/workshops in Mauritius Projects of regional interest for Small Islands to promote use of EO for disaster risk reduction. Setting up of a EO centre in Mauritius (UoM).
