GOALS: Understand the Function and Purpose of Mathematics and Science Centers (MSC) Reflect on CASM (2012 - 2015) Programs for 2015

Michigan Mathematics & Science Centers Network There are 33 regional Centers in the Michigan Mathematics and Science Centers Network. Four main goals: Leadership Curriculum support Professional Learning Student services in local school districts.

BUDGET HISTORY MSC Have been in existence for 28 years Budget History: 2000-01: $398,877 2003-04: $96,536 2010-11: $72,330 (Could no longer support a full time director and services as in previous years) Dave Schulte acted as the interim director and CASM began to re- invent roles, responsibilities, services 2011-12: Implementation Year (Denise became Director at 1/5 time)

Storefront Approach CASM Services 5 ISD’s Clinton Eaton Ingham Ionia Shiawassee In order to provide services CASM requests that each ISD acts as a partner with CASM in implementing a “storefront” approach to services. Each ISD representative assists with communication and training within their own service area.

BUDGET: The MSC are funded by state aid section 99.1 dollars Centers are funded on a 3-tier system based on student population: A = less than 20,000 ($47,387) B = between 20,000 and 90,000 students ($63,183) C = greater than 90,000 students ($78,979) CASM is a Level C center with approximately 89,963 students. We are dangerously close to falling into the level B category!

Supporting Student Services in local school districts Student Programming Grants:  The purpose of this grant opportunity is to promote student interest in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) fields as well as to build leadership capacity in students who have an interest in STEM related studies. This grant opportunity is available to public school teachers throughout Clinton, Eaton, Ingham, Ionia and Shiawassee counties who instruct students full time in grades K-12. These grants are intended to provide experiences beyond the core curriculum that build knowledge and leadership throughout the K-12 educational system. Awards of up to $5000 may be granted in this competitive process.  www.sresd.org

Programming for Students

Supporting Professional Learning Teachers who instruct K-12 public school students full time in schools within Clinton, Eaton, Ingham, Ionia or Shiawassee counties are invited to apply for scholarship funding to enhance professional learning.  The intent of the scholarship is to support professional growth and expand leadership opportunities to improve, promote and develop educational leaders in the areas of science, technology, engineering and mathematics throughout the five county areas. Successful applicants must address how the proposed professional learning will improve teacher(s)’ competence, enhance the applicant’s science, technology, engineering or mathematics knowledge and its anticipated effect on fellow colleagues’ and students’ learning.  Awards of up to $1000 will be considered in this competitive process.  www.sresd.org
