Application of Models in Beles Sub Basin by Moges Berbero Nov 12,2012

Presentation outline Background of Beles Sub Basin Functions of Beles Sub Basin Organization Why models in the Beles basin How to use models in the Basin Application of SWAT model in the Basin Challenges of modeling work in the Basin

Background of Beles Sub Basin Location North-west part of the country East, North-East with Amhara Region South, West and North-West with BGRS

Background of Beles Basin It covers total catchment area of 14,209 Km2 The catchment area includes some parts of two regional states, 22% of Sub Basin lies in Amhara regional state 78% of Sub Basin lies in Benishangul Gumuz region

Background of Beles Basin Average annual areal rainfall is 1476 mm Its average annual run-off is around 4,900 million m3(SMEC,2008) The population within the basin is 372,485

Functions of Beles Sub Basin Organization Serving as an institutional focal point for water resources allocation and management in Beles Sub Basin Be a repository of the official knowledge base for water resources management data and information in the sub-basins

Functions con…. Undertaking research and special studies as required for effective water resources planning and management. Providing the analytical/modeling expertise and tools to effectively manage the water resources of the sub-basins Monitoring water resources of Beles Sub-Basin

Why models in the Beles Basin? Assessing both surface and groundwater availability within the sub basin (SWAT and MODFLOW models) Water resources allocation and planning within the basin for different needs or demands( WEAP or MIKEBASIN models) Main Beles at Bridge G.Beles at Mandura

Water Resources allocation model(WEAP, Mike Basin) How to use model out put Tourism Water Resources allocation model(WEAP, Mike Basin) Irrigation Beles Water Resources Hydropower Water Supply Industrial Domestic Environmental

Application of SWAT model in the Basin Input data used for SWAT model set up Climate data (1997- 2006 ) Precipitation Min and max temperature Wind speed and relative humidity Flow data, both daily and monthly data(1997-2006) Land cover and soil DEM of Beles Basin

Hydrometric stations used for SWAT model Calibration Main Beles at Bridge Outlet of Beles to Abbay G.Beles near Mandura

Metreological stations used for SWAT model application Shahura station Mankush station Pawe station Kunzela station Dangila station Chagni station Bullen station

Soil classification of the Basin

Land cover of the Beles Sub Basin

Hydrologic response unit of the Basin(HRU)

Sample calibration results for Main Beles at the Bridge

calibration results for Gilgel Beles near to Mandura

Challenges of modeling work in the Basin The existing metreological stations within the Basin are not uniformly distributed The existing hydrometric flow measurements did not cover all the catchment area of Beles Basin Main Beles at Bridge gauging station( 3482.4 Km2) Gilgel Beles near to Mandura gauging station(736.6Km2) There is no detail soil and land cover map of the Basin Both flow and weather data are full of missing data

Thank you very much!!!
