What is an Activities Resume An Activities Resume is different than the usual Resume which is used for employment The goal of an activities resume is to highlight your strengths and inform colleges about your accomplishments and special talents. This is your opportunity to showcase your talents so USE IT!

Why Create an Activities Resume? An activities resume will help you keep track of what activities you have done which will help you when you apply for colleges, scholarship and summer programs. The activities resume can be very helpful to people writing letters of recommendation for you (Mrs. Begay says it makes it a lot easier to write a letter for students  )

What goes in my activities resume? Extra Curricular Activities Community Service Honors, Awards & Contests Employment Internship Summer Experiences

Extra Curricular Activities Extracurricular activities are unpaid activities not pertaining to ordinary school classes, within or out of school. Community Service Community service is work done by a person or group of people that benefits others.   What Are Examples of Community Service? There are hundreds of ways to participate in community service, depending on your skills and interests. Some common community service examples include: Working with schoolchildren: Tutoring children after school, collecting school supplies to donate, planting a school garden. Working with senior citizens: Visiting residents of a retirement center, delivering meals to senior citizens, driving them to appointments. Improving the environment: Holding a recycling contest, planting trees, creating a new trail at a nature center. Helping low-income people: Passing out food at a soup kitchen, collecting used clothes to be donated, making first aid kits for homeless shelters.

Honors, Awards, Contests Some examples are: Scholarships Honor Roll inclusion for high grades Awards won for specific activities or subjects (i.e. Best Dancer, Most Valuable Player (MVP), Distinguished Art Award) Perfect attendance awards Work related awards (i.e.: Top Sales Performer) Promotions to leadership positions in your job (i.e.: Shift Supervisor) Volunteer related awards (i.e.: Volunteer of the Year)

Internship Make sure you don’t forget to add your Internship(s) on your activities resume

Summer Experiences Write down any summer programs you have participated from 9-12th grades Be sure to check the AMES Counseling webpage for summer programs info 

What Qualifies as “Leadership” on College Applications? For college admission committees, leadership can take diverse forms – and not just the most obvious ones. For instance if you have: been appointed managers, shift supervisors, etc. at their weekend, after-school, or summer jobs -served as camp counselors or counselors-in-training -spearheaded campaign efforts for a school, community, state, or even national election -worked as babysitters in private homes, at their church or synagogue, etc. -volunteered as peer mediators or mentors (Freshman House Volunteers) -taught math, music, etc. to younger children (Peer Tutors) All of these duties require a form of “leadership”.

Leadership And remember… Actions are more important than titles. Even if you aren’t the captain of the varsity lacrosse team, you could be its leading scorer. You may not be the paper’s editor-in-chief, but you can write award-winning articles. Your commitment and achievement in a given activity are far more important than your title.

Tips 1. After forming categories, place them in order of importance. 2. Then arrange a chart which includes: Activity Years of involvement, including number of hours per week Position(s) held Brief description of activity 3. Be selective in choosing activities: Include only activities participated in during high school. List activities in order of importance. If involvement in an activity was only for a short period of time, leave it out. A long list, which includes several activities with minor participation, is unhelpful. 4. Preparing a description of an activity. Concentrate on giving an informative, succinct description of key activities. Use clear terminology that admissions counselors will understand. Use everyday vocabulary, and spell out abbreviations.
