Layout and Emphasis in a Job Advertisement Advertisements Layout and Emphasis in a Job Advertisement

Font Style All text in an advertisement of this type should be easy to read. A potential applicant needs to access the information easily. Definitely, NO WordArt style text in any part.

Font Size Certain parts of the advert need to stand out. These include: the company name; the job title; the salary/wage/hours; the contact details. Text for the job title should be at least as big as for the company name, if not bigger.

Using Text Effects As well as font size we can use other facilities in the software to emphasis parts of the advert. These include: bold text; all capitals; spaced capitals; line spacing. Do NOT use italics. This is usually used to indicate something in a passage of text that is different, such as a quotation.

Alignment All the text should have consistent alignment. It may be aligned to the left, the right, be centred or justified. It could be a combination of centred and justified as shown here. It’s important that the look of the advert is balanced.

Images and Borders Use images with caution. Only one is necessary. If the alignment is centred the image must also be centred. Here the image balances the left-aligned text by being on the right. A border shows the limits of the advert so the reader knows where to start and where to finish.
