Julie Mattson 10th Period Invasive Species

Asian Clam Scattered distribution across state including many Long Island waters, Finger Lakes, Chautauqua Lake, Lake Erie and Lake George. It is two clams cringed together. The clams filter feed on plankton and compete with native mollusks for food and space. It is thought that it was brought to the U.S. by immigrants as a food source. Asian clams can colonize the intake pipes of water treatment systems and power stations.

Ladybugs help gardeners and farmers by eating tiny insect pests that damage plants. Infestation occurs during the fall with renewed activity on warm winter days and again in the spring. To help stop lady bugs seal gaps and cracks where ladybug beetles may enter the structure. Scientists say they came from Japan. Lady beetles feed on aphids and other soft-bodied insects that can damage plants in agricultural crops, gardens and landscapes, making them beneficial insects to farmers and gardeners. these lady bugs are in new York. 9 Spotted Ladybug

There impact is that they clogs pipes There impact is that they clogs pipes. They come from Caspian Sea in Europe. They arrived in the late 1980s in the ballets water of ships. Zebra Mussels are small, averaging about an inch long. They are algae feeders. There are many methods that have been investigated to help control zebra mussels. These are in all kids of lakes even Chautauqua lake Zebra Mussel

Found in Lake Erie, Upper and Lower Niagara River, Lake Ontario and the St. Lawrence River. They have entered into the Mississippi River drainage, their range will naturally expand beyond the Great Lakes. Round Gobies are bottom-dwelling fish that were introduced to the Great Lakes from central Eurasia via the ballast water of large, ocean-going cargo ships. These fish come from Black & Caspian Seas in Europe. Round Goby

Found in Lake Ontario, Lake Erie, Finger Lakes and some adjoining waters. They arrived in ships ‘ballast water from Eurasia. You can get rid of them by Drain lake or river water from bilge. They eat planktonic algae. They came from Eurasia Fishhook Waterflea

Found in Chautauqua Lake, Cassadaga Lakes, Erie Canal, Lake Ontario and scattered ponds and Reservoirs in the Hudson Valley and Long Island. Adults eat small fish, insects. Baby fish feed on tiny zooplankton, including insects. White perch came from the Atlantic coastal region in brackish water. They compete for zooplankton to eat. We control them by reporting suspected findings in inland waters. White Perch

Came from parts of Asia and Africa Came from parts of Asia and Africa. It arrived when aquarium owners discarded their unwanted exotic species in the local waterways. The method is to have a professional use chemicals, they must have a permit. Virginia, Maryland, Pennsylvania, New York and Arkansas. They have a similar diet to largemouth bass. The impact is that the eat zooplankton, insect larvae, small crustaceans, they are in new York in Orange County Snakehead fish

Bloody Red Shrimp Great Lakes, Oneida Lake and some Finger Lakes. They eat water fleas and algae .They eat a lot of zooplankton.to prevent this species you want to learn what it looks like and inspect your boat before putting it in another body of water. They were spread be being caught in ballast tanks by ships going to Europe.

Pythons are from Asia. Pythons eat all kinds of mammals, birds, and even alligators. They were captured in the Everglades. To try to get rid of the snake you have to get a professional to do it. You are not allowed to do it yourself. Click on picture Pythons

Came from France. It eats oak, maple, apple, aspen, mountain ash, pine and spruce trees. You can kill the adult ones by squishing them. They were brought here because the wanted to breed them with silk worms. Gypsy moth
