FACT: If you saved all the rubbish that homes in the UK throw away, in just one year you’d have enough to fill dustbins stretching all the way to the Moon and back! At the moment, most of this rubbish is buried in landfill sites (big holes in the ground used for dumping rubbish) – a real waste of waste. We all know that we need to start recycling more of this rubbish. But how about reusing it? Could we turn some of the things that we throw in the bin into new, useful, good quality products? In this unit you will: Design and make a useful item that incorporates throwaway items. gain knowledge and understanding of the design and make process understand who you are designing for by creating a customer profile design and label a range of products write a design specification produce a step-by-step plan for making your product make a quality product. add 10 keywords to your vocabulary. Go to the Research page at ((need specific address for this part of the site)) and read the information about Remarkable pencils, toy cars from tin cans, rubbish resources and hoes from tractor parts. Using words and pictures create a ‘mood board’ in the cogs below to illustrate the themes of recycling and reusing.

Choose a useful everyday product that you like and enjoy using at school or at home. Then try to answer the following questions about your product. 1. What type of product is it? Where was it made? What is the purpose of the product? What materials have been used to make it? 4. Draw the product. How has it been constructed? 5. Separate the product into its component parts and draw each component part. 2. Who would use the product? 3. What equipment was used to make it? What are its dimensions?

Now answer the same questions for another everyday product that is very different from your first choice. For example, if you focused on a pencil before, you might look at a bucket here. 1.
