Freud: was convinced that the cause of patients physical problems were psychological in nature Believed people are unaware of many of their thoughts and motives because many of them come from the ‘unconscious mind’

FREUD’S THEORY OF THE MIND -The mind has 3 aspects. Each aspect influences the way we think. -Freud believed that we are born all ID. As we grow we develop the ego and super ego EGO (conscious): -rational part of the mind -where decisions are made (although these decisions can be influenced by unconscious)

FREUD’S THEORY OF THE MIND CONT… ID (unconscious): -composed of instincts that give rise to aggressive impulses and biological drives (e.g. hunger, anger, etc…) -seeks pleasure and avoids pain

FREUD’S THEORY OF THE MIND CONT… SUPER EGO (subconscious): -part of the mind that acts as a conscience (tells us what we should and shouldn’t do) -is influenced by our family, peers, values of our culture, etc… -parents are very important in developing it

In pairs, create your own scenario and apply it to Freud’s 3 parts of the mind.

PSYCHOANALYSIS: Therapeutic Techniques 1. Dream Analysis -Patients keep dream journal -Dream journal is analyzed by therapist for meaning 2. Hypnosis -Believed that a therapist can access unconscious while patient is under hypnosis 3. Free Association -Patients say anything that comes to mind, without censorship 4. Transference -Patients transfer the emotions they have for others (related to issues in their lives) onto the therapist in therapy
