The Church as a worldwide community for salvation To understand what is meant by faith and salvation Understand why Catholics believe that the Church can help them get to heaven Evaluate whether only Christians can get to heaven

The Church as a worldwide community for salvation A sin is any action which is against God’s rules. If we sin then we are divided from God and need to ask for forgiveness to be reunited. Christians believe that if you die without your sins being forgiven then you go to purgatory or hell. Purgatory- is a temporary place of purification where people go if they have unforgiven sins. Hell- is a place of eternal punishment reserved for those who have committed serious sins. It is eternal separation from God. Copy and define the three key words. (Leave space for 2 more) Why do you think Catholics believe in purgatory?

Please forgive all my sins God. Amen I am a Christian but I will ask God to forgive my sins tomorrow I am not sorry for anything I have done wrong and I am not a Christian.

As all your sins were forgiven when you died, you will go straight to heaven.

As you were a Christian but your sins were not forgiven when you died, you will go to purgatory

Welcome to Purgatory Heaven

Some time later

Recap

The Second Coming of Christ I will now judge you to see who goes to the new heaven and the new earth I am back !

Summary When you die you either go to: Heaven (If your sins are forgiven) Purgatory (If you a Christian but have un-forgiven sins) Hell (If you are not a Christian) At the end of time, Jesus will come again and create a new heaven and a new earth. Those from heaven and purgatory will go to the new heaven and earth. Everyone else suffers eternal death.

The Church as a worldwide community for salvation Christians believe that they should say sorry to God for their sins and if they do he will forgive them. Salvation means being saved from sin Christians believe that if we commit any sin then we deserve to go to hell. They believe that even one sin will separate us from God and if we are not reunited with him then we will spend eternity separated from God. This is called hell. Christians believe that when Jesus died on the cross he took away our punishment and so we now know if we say sorry to God then we can be reunited with him and can be with him eternally. This is called heaven. The act of Jesus dying is often known as the act of atonement. Atonement- reconciliation between God and Humanity Add the key terms to your list

The Church as a worldwide community for salvation Explain what salvation is using all of the key terms used today. Do you think more people will go to purgatory first or straight to heaven. Explain your answer Why do you think it is impossible to go from purgatory to hell?

The Church as a worldwide community for salvation Roman Catholics believe that the only way that we can be saved is through the church. They believe that the true faith has been handed down from the disciples to the current church leaders, apostolic succession. So it is the mission of the church to guide us in our faith. The church helps us to find salvation through confession. Confession is when you confess your sins to the priest and he forgives you. Explain why we have confession Explain how the church helps Catholics get to heaven? (8) “Nobody really goes to heaven” Do you agree? Explain your answer (3) Why would some people disagree with you? (3) Should we believe that only Christians go to heaven? Explain your opinion
